CNN leads the pack at the News and Documentary Emmys
A night of recognition for journalistic excellence
In a year marked by significant global events and groundbreaking stories, the News and Documentary Emmys have once again highlighted the best in the industry. This year, CNN has emerged as the frontrunner, securing an impressive 39 nominations. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced the contenders, showcasing the network’s dominance in various categories.
Anderson Cooper’s standout contributions
A significant portion of CNN’s success can be attributed to Anderson Cooper. His series, “Anderson Cooper 360” and “The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper,” received multiple nominations, underscoring his impact on contemporary journalism. Other notable CNN programs that performed well include “Amanpour,” “The Lead With Jake Tapper,” “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” and “The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer.” Reporters such as Nada Bashir, Jeremy Diamond, Clarissa Ward, David Culver, Nima Elbagir, and Donie OโSullivan also received individual recognition for their outstanding work.
National Geographic and PBS: Close contenders
While CNN led the nominations, National Geographic and PBS were not far behind, each securing 34 nominations. ABC also had a strong showing with 31 nods. Among Spanish-language outlets, Univision led with 13 nominations. National Geographic’s “Trafficked With Mariana van Zeller” was a standout, earning a remarkable 20 nominations.
Vice’s changing fortunes
Last year, Vice was a significant contender with 30 nominations. However, the cancellation of its flagship news program in spring 2023 led to a drop in its nomination count to ten this year. This shift highlights the ever-evolving landscape of news media and the challenges faced by even the most established outlets.
Celebrating journalistic dedication
Adam Sharp, President and CEO of NATAS, expressed pride in recognizing the achievements of these exceptional journalists and documentarians. He emphasized the importance of celebrating their dedication and creativity, especially in an era of increasing and ever-changing pressures.
The judging process
The 45th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards received over 2200 submissions from the 2023 calendar year. A diverse pool of more than 980 judges from across the television and streaming/digital media news and documentary community evaluated the entries, ensuring a comprehensive and fair assessment of the nominees.
Event details
This year’s News & Documentary Emmy Awards will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25 (news categories) and Thursday, Sept. 26 (documentary categories) at the Palladium Times Square in New York. The ceremonies will be streamed live on NATAS’ dedicated viewing platform, available on the web at watch.theemmys.tv and via The Emmys apps.
