A star-studded reunion: ‘The Fabulous Four’ brings comedy and camaraderie to the big screen
When the poster for “The Fabulous Four” first hit social media, it sparked a whirlwind of excitement. Many thought it was a fan-made dream cast, but the reality was even more thrilling. The film, which premiered this Friday, features an ensemble of legendary actresses: Susan Sarandon, Bette Midler, Megan Mullally, and Sheryl Lee Ralph. The production itself was as wild as the plot, promising a comedy that’s both heartwarming and hilarious.
A powerhouse cast with accolades galore
The combined achievements of this stellar cast are nothing short of impressive. Between them, they boast an Oscar, six Emmys, four Golden Globes, three Grammys, two Tonys, six SAG Awards, two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Peabody Award, and a Kennedy Center Honor. This dream team comes together to tell the story of four old friends reuniting in Key West for a wedding, with plenty of laughs and heartfelt moments along the way.
A tale of friendship and forgiveness
The plot centers around Marilyn (Midler), who is getting married and invites her old friends to be her bridesmaids. However, Lou (Sarandon) is unaware of the true reason for the trip, as she and Marilyn had a falling out years ago when Marilyn married Lou’s college boyfriend. Sarandon explains, “It’s about friendship, but it’s also about forgiveness. It comes out later that she never even apologized. But it wasn’t just that she lost the guy; it was that she lost her friend, her ‘do or die’ that had been through everything with her before that.”
Distinctive characters with unique quirks
Each character in “The Fabulous Four” has a distinct personality. Lou is a successful but sullen surgeon, Marilyn is an ever-smiling bride-to-be, Kitty (Ralph) is a Mother Earth type thriving in the cannabis industry, and Alice (Mullally) is a free-spirited, spontaneous individual. Sarandon originally was offered the role of Marilyn but chose to play Lou for the challenge. “I liked the challenge of playing someone like Lou, who is so mopey,” she says. “How do you make somebody that says ‘no’ to everything active, somebody who will not let the joy in?”
A cat lady’s eccentric passion
Lou’s eccentric passion is her love for cats, which adds a humorous twist to her character. In the film, she is lured to Key West by the promise of adopting a six-toed cat. One memorable scene shows Lou watching videos of her cats on her phone, which were actually Sarandon’s real pets. “I suggested a FaceTime with my cats, so my assistant filmed my cats,” she reveals, adding with a laugh, “My cats feel that there were much better takes of them.”
Unscripted hilarity and on-set fun
The film’s production was filled with spontaneous moments, particularly from Mullally. One of her ad-libs, “You know, you have sex with your cat; it happens,” had everyone in stitches. Sarandon praises Mullally’s improvisational skills, saying, “Megan coming at things all the time from this unpredictable place just kept everything really fresh.”
Mullally, despite suffering from Covid during the interview, shared how much fun the film was to work on. “Alice is kind of like a gnat that’s buzzing around the other characters annoying them and not paying attention to any responsibilities,” she says. Originally, her character had a dire health issue, but Mullally suggested a change to keep the comedy light-hearted.
Off-screen camaraderie
The fun didn’t stop when the cameras did. Mullally recalls evenings spent in Sarandon’s hotel room, laughing about the day’s events. “Just kind of recapping crazy things that had happened during the day and crying with laughter. There’s nothing better.” Sarandon fondly remembers attending a live performance of the “Rocky Horror Show” during Pride Week with Mullally, which left the audience in awe.
