Sony Pictures Television partners with Espotlight for Spanish co-productions
A new chapter in Spanish television
Sony Pictures Television (SPT) has embarked on an exciting multi-year co-production journey with Anxo Rodríguez’s Spanish production company, Espotlight. This collaboration aims to co-develop and co-produce fresh content, further solidifying SPT’s footprint in Spain.
The mastermind behind Espotlight
Anxo Rodríguez, a Goya Award-winning producer, brings a wealth of experience to the table. With a background in law and business affairs, Rodríguez has an impressive portfolio. He produced and executive produced the documentary Paco de Lucia: La Búsqueda and played a pivotal role in the legal and business affairs of Netflix’s hit series Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) and HBO’s Foodie Love. In early 2020, Rodríguez founded Espotlight with a vision to create Spanish content for global audiences. One of the current projects in development is Dime tu Nombre for Prime Video.
A talent powerhouse
Rodríguez also owns Alter Ego Talent, a talent agency representing writers, directors, actors, and composers. This agency is a testament to his commitment to nurturing and promoting top-tier talent in the industry.
A strategic alliance
Matthew Justice, SPT’s EVP and head of U.K. and Europe, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “This deal underscores SPT’s intent to be in business locally in Spain and work with the best local players. Anxo and the wider Espotlight team are proving that they have an incredible eye for content, working with some of Spain’s top creators, delivering amazing shows, and we are thrilled to join forces in order to produce great shows together for local and international audiences.”
Rodríguez echoed this sentiment, highlighting the potential of the alliance to reach new clients and audiences. “We are thrilled to get in business with Sony Pictures Television. This alliance will strengthen our ability to reach new clients and new audiences. SPT is showing a great ambition in the Spanish territory with a strategy very aligned to ours. Under this relationship, we will be able to amplify the business strategies of our shows, exploit our ability to package great talent for the upcoming projects, and build a stronger machinery for physical production.”
Recent milestones
Earlier this year, SPT launched La Academia, their first Spanish-language scripted series in the territory. In 2023, they also signed a talent deal with Alvaro Morte’s 300 Pistolas, further demonstrating their commitment to Spanish content.
A promising future
This partnership between SPT and Espotlight is poised to bring a new wave of Spanish television to both local and international audiences. With Rodríguez’s expertise and SPT’s resources, the future looks bright for Spanish content on the global stage.
