Thai series ‘Master of the House’ tops Netflix’s global charts
A new milestone for Thai television
In an unprecedented achievement for Thai-produced content, the murder-mystery series Master of the House has clinched the top spot on Netflix’s weekly Global Non-English series chart. This seven-part series, in its second week of availability, dominated the Global Top 10 TV (Non-English) list for the week of July 22-28. It also made its way into the top ten charts of 63 countries and territories, showcasing its widespread appeal.
A tale of wealth, power, and betrayal
Master of the House revolves around a wealthy diamond merchant who uses his birthday banquet to drop a bombshell on his family: he has married one of his maids, and she will inherit his vast fortune. The merchant’s subsequent death from a balcony fall ignites a fierce battle for power and wealth between his new wife and his disgruntled relatives. This gripping plotline is a testament to the show’s ability to weave intricate narratives that captivate audiences.

Reflecting Thai society’s complexities
Thailand’s deeply conservative and hierarchical society is mirrored and amplified in the series. The filmmakers have meticulously crafted a narrative that delves into the nuances of social stratification and the pursuit of power. The screenplay, penned by Nut Nualpang, Weerasu Worrapot, Vatanyu Ingkavivat, and Sita Likitvanichkul, is brought to life by veteran director Sivaroj Kongsakul. Kongsakul has adeptly adapted and upgraded the traditional “Lakorn” style of Thai soap operas, creating a visually stunning portrayal of greed and cruelty.
A visual masterpiece
The production team at Kantana Motion Pictures sought a mansion that exudes grandeur and opulence, emphasizing the vastness of wealth and the insignificance of those who serve within it. The mansion, perched on an elevated landscape, serves as a symbol of the oppressive nature of wealth. “Even the simple act of a servant walking through the space evokes a sense of oppression. It’s like a painting where the underprivileged could never imagine themselves belonging,” said Kongsakul.
Scenes featuring interactions among the servants are bathed in natural light, while scenes between the staff and their employers are often illuminated by artificial sources, such as spotlights. This deliberate choice either “celebrates the servants” or “shines a light so intensely upon them that their very identities begin to dissolve,” the director explained.
Stellar cast and authentic performances
The cast of Master of the House is led by Narilya Gulmongkolpech, Teerapong Leowrakwong, Chartayodom Hiranyasthiti, Thanavate Siriwattanagu, Nusba Punnakanta, and Claudia Chakrabandhu Na Ayudhya. Supporting actors include Tassawan Saeneewong, Narupornkamol Chaisang, and Thitinan Rattanathitinan.
“Every actor meticulously crafted their character. They poured their hearts and souls into their roles. This freedom, combined with open communication and collaboration, allowed them to reach their full potential, resulting in exceptionally authentic portrayals,” Kongsakul noted.
A growing trend of successful Thai productions
Netflix has previously enjoyed success with other Thai productions, including Hunger, Delete, and Ready, Set, Love. The success of Master of the House further cements Thailand’s position as a burgeoning hub for high-quality, globally appealing content.
