CBS merges ’48 Hours’ and ‘NCIS’ for a gripping new podcast series
A unique blend of true crime and drama
In an exciting development for fans of true crime and procedural dramas, Paramount Audio is set to launch a new podcast series titled “48 Hours: NCIS”. This innovative crossover brings together elements from the long-standing newsmagazine “48 Hours” and the iconic drama franchise “NCIS”. The podcast, hosted by seasoned journalist and “The Talk” host Natalie Morales, will delve into real-life cases investigated by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS).
Real-life cases, real-life drama
Premiering on October 29, the series opener focuses on the tragic case of Erin Corwin, a 19-year-old Marine wife who disappeared in California’s Joshua Tree National Park. Her body was discovered two months later in an abandoned mine, and another Marine was identified as a suspect. The six-episode season promises to unravel a “twisted story of infidelity and betrayal” that led to Erin’s untimely death.
A powerful showcase of Paramount’s IP
Steve Raizes, Executive VP of Podcasting and Audio at Paramount Global, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “I can’t think of a better way to showcase the power of Paramount’s IP than by crossing over two of CBS’ most successful franchises to create new, original digital content. We are beyond thrilled to bring fans of ‘NCIS’ a deep dive into the real cases investigated by the agents portrayed on the iconic TV show, and the ’48 Hours’ audience even more premium storytelling aligned with what they expect from the brand.”
Natalie Morales: A personal connection
Natalie Morales, who joined CBS News in 2021, brings a personal touch to the podcast. “Growing up in a military family, I am honored to be able to tell the stories of those who have and continue to serve our country, and to offer unique insights into the inner workings of the NCIS as they help solve cases,” Morales said. “Erin Corwin’s story as a newly pregnant, young military wife is especially heartbreaking. It took the dedication of many NCIS agents to help find her in difficult desert conditions and to solve the mystery of how she died and who was responsible.”
Expanding the ’48 Hours’ brand
“48 Hours: NCIS” is the latest addition to the expanding line of branded “48 Hours” podcasts. Earlier this year, “Blood is Thicker: The Hargan Family Killings” debuted at No. 1 on the Apple podcast charts, driving a significant increase in subscribers to the 48 Hours+ offering on Apple. According to Paramount, average monthly downloads of “48 Hours” franchise podcasts increased by 116% from 2022 to 2023, while all CBS News podcasts saw a 59% increase.
The enduring appeal of ‘NCIS’
The “NCIS” franchise recently celebrated its 1,000th episode, a testament to its enduring popularity. New entries in the franchise, including “NCIS: Origins” and “NCIS: Tony & Ziva”, are set to captivate audiences further. The original “NCIS” series will premiere its 22nd season on CBS on Monday, October 14, while the 37th season of “48 Hours” will kick off on Saturday, September 21.
A must-listen for true crime and drama enthusiasts
For fans of true crime and procedural dramas, “48 Hours: NCIS” offers a compelling blend of real-life cases and dramatic storytelling.
