Alyssa Edwards returns: A new chapter in the global drag race
A triumphant comeback
After a six-year hiatus, the iconic drag queen Alyssa Edwards is back in the spotlight. Edwards is one of the 12 queens vying for a coveted spot in the international pavilion at the Drag Race Hall of Fame in the latest season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars,” which premiered recently on Paramount+.
Edwards, known for her charisma and fierce performances, is determined to settle some “unfinished business” and aims to be crowned the Queen of the Mothertucking World. But what kept her away for so long? According to Edwards, it was all about trusting her instincts and waiting for the right moment. When the opportunity to join “Global All Stars” arose, she seized it. “I remember thinking, ‘I’m ready to challenge myself. I’m ready to put my art back out there,’” she shared. “This was a chapter that felt like unfinished business.”
A global stage for drag excellence
The show features 12 queens from around the world, each bringing their unique flair and talent to the international stage. Representing the flagship American show, Edwards feels a deep connection to her roots. “This is where it all began,” she says.
The lineup includes:
- Athena Likis (Belgium)
- Eva Le Queen (Philippines)
- Gala Varo (Mexico)
- Kitty Scott-Claus (United Kingdom)
- Kween Kong (Australia)
- Miranda Lebrão (Brazil)
- Nehellenia (Italy)
- Pythia (Canada)
- Soa de Muse (France)
- Tessa Testicle (Switzerland)
- Vanity Vain (Sweden)
Edwards likens this iteration of the franchise to the Olympics of Drag. Unlike the traditional workroom entrance, the queens make their debut on the main stage, ensuring they shine brightly from the start.
The weight of representation
For many queens, representing their country on such a grand stage is both an honor and a significant responsibility. Nehellenia, a Season 2 alum of “Drag Race Italia,” admits to feeling the pressure. “Italian drag queens are underestimated,” she says. “We don’t have the same opportunities. We’re just working in clubs. We don’t do TV and premieres, so to be here representing my country and all of my drag sisters is monumental.” She hopes to be the voice for all Italian queens, advocating for more recognition and opportunities.
Kitty Scott-Claus from the UK shares similar sentiments. “At first, I thought it was just like the last time,” she says. “But it’s not just ‘Drag Race UK,’ it’s the entire bloody United Kingdom. It’s huge, but that’s what makes it so exciting. To showcase our drag on this global stage is such an honor.”
Soa de Muse from France, a country often seen as the fashion capital of the world, feels the added pressure of living up to that reputation. “That’s just a cliché,” she says, but acknowledges the challenge of putting her looks together. “I’m just going to have fun because I see all this talent in front of me, and we can learn from each other.”
Pythia, who previously competed on “Drag Race Canada,” approaches the competition with a fresh perspective. “I’m going to have fun and go with it,” she says, promising to deliver an elevated version of herself. “What happens in the past is in the past, and it served me at the time. This is the future, this is the now, and let’s create something new.”
A celebration of diversity and talent
“RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars” is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of diversity, talent, and the art of drag. Each queen brings her unique story, culture, and artistry to the stage, creating a rich tapestry of performances that captivate audiences worldwide.
For fans of cinema, TV series, and music, this season promises to be a thrilling ride. The queens’ performances are not just about winning a title but also about showcasing their countries’ rich drag cultures and breaking stereotypes.
