A new Latin American drama: ‘Domestic Animals’ takes center stage
A fresh collaboration in Latin American cinema
Chile’s Juntos Films and two of Colombia’s most celebrated actors, Angie Cepeda and Juan Pablo Raba, are joining forces for the drama “Domestic Animals”. Directed by Colombian filmmaker Rafael Martínez Moreno, this film is part of the Santiago Film Festival’s Sanfic Fiction Lab.
A story of immigration and classism
“Domestic Animals” is an adaptation of the original story by Antonio Garcia Angel, with a screenplay co-written by Diego Cañizal and Juliana Ospina. The narrative centers on Felicidad, a 55-year-old domestic worker in Miami, who works for the seemingly perfect Ibarra family. As she becomes entangled in their luxurious yet deceptive world, she witnesses the disintegration of the marriage between Guillermo (Raba), an investor, and Claudia (Cepeda), a former beauty queen. Felicidad’s journey is one of self-discovery, as she realizes she is trapped in a facade, much like the neglected fish she cares for in the glass mansion.
A quintessentially Latin American tale
“When we read ‘Domestic Animals’, we recognized it as a quintessentially Latin American story. The journey of its protagonist, Felicidad, is one of immigration, marked by the challenges of inequality and classism, yet navigated with dignity and optimism,” said Francisco Hervé and Felipe Egaña of Juntos Films. They emphasized that Rafael’s vision was not to romanticize migration but to explore the human experience in all its complexities and contradictions. This vision inspired them to become co-producers on the project.
Strengthening partnerships
The collaboration with Ferviente Films is a testament to the strong partnership between the two production houses. They have previously worked together on various projects, including the upcoming “Reina Japonesa”, which is set to begin shooting in April next year.
Exploring universal themes
For Ivan Luna, the story delves into complex and universal themes, such as the pursuit of upper-class status, the ambiguous nature of the American Dream, and the challenges of forming deep connections amid the self-imposed cultural barriers of class. “These barriers often confine the characters, leaving them isolated within their own social ‘fishbowls,’” Luna noted.
Financing and production plans
The team aims to secure film funds from Colombia, Chile, and potentially two other partners from Mexico and Europe. Principal photography will primarily take place in Colombia, with at least a week in Miami for exteriors. They hope to complete the financing phase next year and begin shooting by the first semester of 2026.
A story of vulnerability and connection
“What captivated me most about this story is that, even though we may seem to come from different worlds, vulnerability unites us,” remarked Angie Cepeda. This sentiment underscores the film’s exploration of human connections and the shared experiences that transcend social and cultural barriers.
A director with a sensitive touch
Diana Pérez Mejia highlighted Rafael Martínez Moreno’s debut film “El Piedra” as proof of his ability to direct actors with great skill, talent, and sensitivity. She also noted the importance of having writer Juliana Ospina on board, ensuring a crucial feminine perspective in shaping the main characters and the complex relationship between Felicidad and Claudia. This perspective is particularly important to Pérez Mejia as a woman, creative producer, and project leader.
Sanfic Film Festival
The Sanfic Film Festival kicked off on August 18 and wraps up on the 25th. This festival provides a platform for showcasing innovative and thought-provoking films from Latin America and beyond.
