Disney’s streaming price hike: What it means for you
A new wave of ‘streamflation’
This fall, Disney is set to increase the prices for all stand-alone tiers of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ in the U.S. The price hikes, effective October 17, aim to boost Disney’s streaming revenue and profitability. Interestingly, the prices for Disney+/Hulu bundles and the Disney+/Hulu/Max combo, offered in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, will remain unchanged, making these bundles more appealing to consumers.
New features to soften the blow
Starting September 4, Disney+ subscribers will gain access to the ABC News Live streaming channel and a playlist focused on preschool content. Additionally, Disney+ Premium (no ads) subscribers will enjoy four curated playlists later in the fall. These new features seem designed to mitigate the impact of the price increases.
“With this growing offering, and new ways to enjoy your favorite Disney+ content, Disney subscription plans remain among the best values in streaming today,” the company stated.
The new pricing structure
The ad-supported version of Disney+ will rise by $2 monthly, reaching $9.99. Disney+ Premium (no ads) will also see a $2 increase, bringing it to $15.99. Hulu with ads will now cost $9.99/month (up $2), and the ad-free Hulu will go up by a dollar to $18.99/month. The Disney triple-play bundles with Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ will also increase by $2 per month.

New content and playlists
Next month, Disney+ will launch a playlist focused on preschool content, featuring TV series and shorts like Sofia the First, The Lion Guard, Puppy Dog Pals, and Minnie’s Bow-Toons. Later this fall, four additional curated playlists will roll out to Premium subscribers, featuring content refreshed monthly:
- Seasonal Content: A collection of seasonal-themed content from across the Disney+ catalog.
- Epic Stories: A compilation of stories from brands and franchises including Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars.
- Throwbacks: Nostalgic pop culture content.
- Real Life: Traditional documentaries, biopics, and true stories.
“Playlists are the latest example of how we’re providing the best value and experience for our subscribers every time they open Disney+,” said Alisa Bowen, president of Disney+. “Whether it’s news, kids’ content, popular genres, hit TV shows, or blockbuster films, there will be something for everyone in a lean-back viewing experience based on seasonality and interest.”
Personal reflections for enthusiasts
For cinema and TV series enthusiasts, these price hikes might seem like a bitter pill to swallow. However, the addition of new features and curated playlists could offer a richer viewing experience. The inclusion of ABC News Live and preschool content is a strategic move to cater to a broader audience, making the service more versatile.
For those who enjoy a mix of genres, the curated playlists like Epic Stories and Throwbacks could be a treasure trove. Imagine diving into a collection of Marvel and Star Wars stories or reliving nostalgic moments with classic Disney content. These playlists could make the higher subscription cost feel more justified.
In-depth analysis
From a business perspective, Disney’s decision to keep bundle prices unchanged while increasing stand-alone tier prices is a clever strategy. It encourages consumers to opt for bundles, which offer more value for money. This move could potentially increase the number of subscribers for Hulu and ESPN+, thereby boosting overall revenue.
Moreover, the introduction of new features and content playlists is a testament to Disney’s commitment to enhancing user experience. By offering a diverse range of content, Disney+ aims to cater to various interests and age groups, making it a more attractive option in the competitive streaming market.
Final thoughts
While the price hikes might initially deter some subscribers, the added features and curated playlists could make Disney+ a more compelling choice in the long run. For those who value a diverse and rich content library, the new offerings might outweigh the increased cost. As Disney continues to innovate and expand its content, it remains a strong contender in the ever-evolving streaming landscape.
