Eric Dane’s journey: From McSteamy to complex characters
A new chapter in Eric Dane’s career
Eric Dane, known for his iconic role as Dr. Mark Sloan, a.k.a. McSteamy, on “Grey’s Anatomy,” has experienced a significant transformation in his career and personal life. During a recent Zoom interview, Dane expressed his gratitude and excitement for his current projects, particularly his new indie drama, One Fast Move. “I’ve been put through the wringer,” he shared, “but now I’m having fucking fun.”
Overcoming personal struggles
Dane’s private life has often been a topic of public interest, especially during his time on “Grey’s Anatomy.” He recently opened up about his struggles with substance abuse, which contributed to his character’s departure from the show. However, those challenging times are behind him now, and Dane is focused on his future endeavors.
A busy and fulfilling career
In addition to One Fast Move, where he plays a former motorcycle racing champion and estranged father, Dane has been involved in several other projects. This summer, he appeared in Bad Boys: Ride or Die alongside Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
The impact of “Euphoria”
One of Dane’s most notable recent roles is Cal Jacobs in the critically acclaimed series Euphoria. His portrayal of a deeply troubled and closeted father has earned him significant praise. Despite production delays and controversies, the show is set to return for a third season, much to the delight of its fans. ”I was optimistic that it was going to come back, so I’m very happy,” Dane said. “There’s a huge audience, and I love making it.”
Navigating dark roles
Playing such intense characters can be challenging, and Dane admits that it sometimes affects him off-screen. “Sometimes you take it in the car ride home with you,” he explained. “But for the most part, this too shall pass, and nothing beats a good night’s sleep.”
Reflections on “Grey’s Anatomy”
Dane’s role as McSteamy on ”Grey’s Anatomy” remains one of his most memorable. When asked about his daughters’ reactions to his character, he shared a humorous anecdote. “My 12-year-old, when she started watching it a couple of years ago, looked at me and said, ‘Dad, where did your abs go?’” he recalled with a laugh.
Despite his fond memories of the show, Dane is content with his character’s arc. “I think I did exactly what I was supposed to do on that show,” he said. ”I had a fun time making it, and the actors had such a great relationship.”
Bonding on set
Dane’s positive experiences extend to his work on One Fast Move, where he formed a close bond with co-star KJ Apa. “He’s a keeper,” Dane said. The film, directed by Kelly Blatz, features several intense scenes between the two actors. “There was one where after we shot it, KJ pulled me aside and said, ‘I really felt like hitting you, Eric,’” Dane recalled. “I said, ‘I understand. I think that’s what you were supposed to feel.’”
Looking ahead
As Dane continues to navigate his career, he remains optimistic and enthusiastic about his future projects. His journey from McSteamy to complex characters like Cal Jacobs demonstrates his growth as an actor and his ability to tackle diverse roles. With One Fast Move premiering on Prime Video on August 8, fans can look forward to seeing more of Dane’s compelling performances.
