Matt Damon reflects on fame and friendship with Ben Affleck
Navigating the spotlight: A tale of two actors
Matt Damon recently shared his thoughts on the intense media scrutiny faced by his longtime friend and collaborator, Ben Affleck. Speaking on a podcast, Damon expressed his gratitude for having a relatively private life compared to Affleck, despite their parallel careers. The two actors first gained widespread recognition with their Oscar-winning film, Good Will Hunting, and have since headlined numerous franchises and major studio movies.
The burden of fame
Damon acknowledged the stark difference in how the press has treated him versus Affleck. “I’ve been really lucky in that way,” Damon said. “Especially when I look at Casey’s brother, Ben. I can’t imagine living under that kind of scrutiny. And it’s been like that for 25 years.” Damon attributes his relative anonymity to his “boring” marriage to Luciana Barroso, which has kept him out of the tabloid spotlight.
The impact of personal life on public perception
Damon believes that his stable personal life has played a significant role in keeping the media at bay. “That magazine culture that was so huge 25 years ago kind of ignored me,” he added. “A guy who’s married, it’s so boring. What would sell those things were scandal and sex and all that stuff. As long as you didn’t do any of that stuff, it wasn’t really worth their time to wait to take your picture.”
Fame’s disorienting effect
Damon described fame as a “bizarre, disorienting feeling,” noting that he initially struggled to find his footing in Hollywood. “I just wanted to get to work, and so I kind of hid for a few years while I got my bearings. Luckily, I fell in love with someone who was not in the business who would tolerate that side of it, and that really helped me.”
A friendship that endures
Throughout their careers, Damon and Affleck have supported each other through various challenges. Affleck has openly credited Damon with helping him reshape his career after a particularly difficult period working on Justice League. “I had a really nadir experience around ‘Justice League’ for a lot of different reasons,” Affleck shared. “Not blaming anybody, there’s a lot of things that happened. But really what it was is that I wasn’t happy. I didn’t like being there. I didn’t think it was interesting. And then some really awful things happened. But, that’s when I was like, I’m not going to do that anymore.”
Rediscovering joy in filmmaking
Affleck revealed that Damon played a crucial role in his decision to focus on projects that bring him joy. “I talked to you about it and you were a principal influence on that decision,” Affleck said to Damon. “I want to do the things that would bring me joy. Then we went and did Last Duel and I had fun every day on this movie. I wasn’t the star, I wasn’t likable. I was a villain. I wasn’t all the things I thought I was supposed to be when I started out, and yet it was a wonderful experience.”
Future collaborations
Damon and Affleck continue to work together on various projects. They recently shared the screen in Air and have several films in development, including “RIP,” a new Netflix thriller from writer and director Joe Carnahan, and a movie about Hulk Hogan’s infamous legal battle against Gawker, directed by Gus Van Sant.
