Protagonist Pictures secures global rights for ‘Kill the Jockey’
A new absurdist comedy set to make waves
Protagonist Pictures has recently acquired the worldwide sales rights for Luis Ortega’s latest film, Kill the Jockey. This absurdist comedy is set to make its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival and will also feature in the Centrepiece section at the Toronto Film Festival.
A tale of self-discovery and danger
The narrative centers on Remo Manfredini (played by Nahuel Pérez Biscayart), a legendary jockey whose self-destructive tendencies are beginning to overshadow his talent. His relationship with his girlfriend, Abril (portrayed by Úrsula Corberó), is also at risk. On the day of the most crucial race of his career, which could clear his debts to his mobster boss Sirena (played by Daniel Gimenez Cacho), Remo suffers a severe accident. He mysteriously disappears from the hospital and starts wandering the streets of Buenos Aires. Free from his identity, Remo embarks on a journey of self-discovery. However, Sirena is determined to find him, dead or alive.
Stellar cast and crew
The film boasts an impressive cast, including César Award winner Nahuel Pérez Biscayart (120 Beats Per Minute, My New Friends), Úrsula Corberó (Netflix’s Money Heist, upcoming Sky series The Day of the Jackal), and Ariel Award winner Daniel Gimenez Cacho (Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, Zama). The screenplay is co-written by Ortega, Rodolfo Palacios, and Fabián Casas.
A visionary director
Dave Bishop, CEO of Protagonist Pictures, praised Ortega, stating, “Luis is a cinematic visionary who has proven himself to be one of Argentina’s most exciting directors. Executive producers include Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro, Isaac Lee, Ron Broitman, Federico Frágola, Phin Glynn, Delfina Montecchia, and Martín Fisner.
A collaborative effort
The film is co-produced by Piano, El Estudio, Snowglobe, Jacinto Films, and Barraca, in association with VIX, Pampa Films, and Gloriamundi, together with Dim Films and Fundación Ernesto Sábato.

Ortega’s cinematic journey
Ortega’s previous film, El Angel, premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and was Argentina’s Oscar entry that year. Inspired by the true story of the notorious 1970s serial killer Carlos Robledo Puch, the film achieved a record box office opening in Argentina for a local production.
