A new era for performing artists: The Meryl Streep Center opens its doors
A tribute to a legend
The SAG-AFTRA Foundation has unveiled the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to nurturing the talents of actors and performers. Located on the 10th floor of the Union’s headquarters on Wilshire Boulevard, this 15,000 square-foot center is named in honor of Meryl Streep, whose philanthropic contributions have been unparalleled in the Foundation’s nearly 40-year history.
A beacon of support and inspiration
Courtney B. Vance, president and chairman of the board of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, expressed his admiration for Streep’s unwavering support: “Meryl Streep’s quiet and consistent support for the Foundation and her fellow actors for decades has been nothing short of extraordinary. In recent years when serious crises struck our community, Meryl stepped up immediately to help lift up performers who needed it most.”
He continued, “Naming our new Center in her honor is our way of expressing gratitude for her unwavering commitment and generosity, as well as embodying the excellence she exemplifies in our industry. The Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists will encourage and nurture the talents of countless performers, serving as a beacon of inspiration to us all. We are immensely proud to unveil this vibrant new home where SAG-AFTRA artists can connect, collaborate, and grow together. We eagerly anticipate the remarkable work, creativity, and careers that will come from it.”
A space designed for excellence
Among the new facilities is the Nicole Kidman Green Room, a stylish and comfortable environment for panelists and guests of the Foundation to relax and prepare before their “Conversations” and “The Business” programs. Designed in collaboration with Kidman, a major donor to the Foundation, this space reflects her commitment to supporting fellow artists.
The Leonardo DiCaprio On-Camera Lab is another highlight, providing actors with the opportunity to record professional self-tapes and develop their on-screen presence using high-quality camera, lighting, and sound equipment. Staff members are available to assist as readers and offer creative and constructive feedback, ensuring that performers can hone their craft in a supportive environment.
Additionally, the center features the newly relocated and upgraded Don LaFontaine Voiceover Lab, equipped with the latest audio technology and recording booths. This lab offers voice actors the chance to record voiceovers and enhance their techniques, further expanding the resources available to SAG-AFTRA artists.
Empowering artists through education
The Meryl Streep Center will also host Casting Access classes, led by industry professionals. These classes provide invaluable insights and training, helping performers navigate the complexities of the entertainment industry and advance their careers.
Cyd Wilson, executive director of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, emphasized the significance of the new center: “The opening of the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists marks a major milestone for the Foundation. This Center will provide unmatched resources and opportunities all at no cost to SAG-AFTRA artists.” Wilson continued, “In addition, the Foundation operates and maintains its programs in Los Angeles, New York, and online through charitable gifts, grants, and sponsorships.”
A hub for screenings and events
As the SAG-AFTRA Foundation resumes its in-person programming, the new Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson Screening Room will host screenings in a state-of-the-art facility named in honor of two additional major supporters of the Foundation. The “Powered by LG” screening room will feature the Foundation’s “Conversations” programs and “The Business” panels, offering members the chance to enjoy film and television screenings on a stunning 200-inch “Miraclass” 4K direct-view LED cinema screen from LG Electronics, complete with immersive surround sound.
A versatile venue for the industry
The Meryl Streep Center is also available for third-party rentals, making it an ideal venue for industry screenings and premieres, FYC events, table reads, corporate events, and more. This flexibility ensures that the center remains a vibrant and active hub for the entertainment community.
A legacy of support
Since its formation in 1985, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation has distributed more than $18.6 million in emergency financial and health assistance to actors, as well as disaster relief. It has also awarded over $9.2 million in scholarship funds, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to supporting the artistic community.
The opening of the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists represents a significant step forward for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, providing a dedicated space for performers to develop their skills, connect with peers, and advance their careers. This new facility stands as a testament to the power of philanthropy and the enduring impact of one of the industry’s most beloved figures.
