Alien: Romulus set to dominate the box office
Alien: Romulus is poised to make a significant impact at the box office, with projections estimating an opening weekend haul between $28 million and $38 million. Some industry insiders are even more optimistic, suggesting that the film could bring in closer to $40 million or $50 million. If these higher estimates hold true, it will continue Disney’s impressive summer streak.
Disney’s summer success
Disney has had a remarkable summer, starting with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which was May’s highest-grossing movie, raking in $397 million. This success was followed by Inside Out 2 in June, which became the highest-grossing movie of the month with a staggering $1.59 billion. July saw the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, which also topped the charts with $1.03 billion. By August, Disney had surpassed $3 billion in worldwide ticket sales, making it the first studio of 2024 to achieve this milestone.
Looking ahead, Disney has more potential blockbusters on the horizon, including Moana 2 set for release on November 27, and Mufasa: The Lion King scheduled for December 20.
Alien: Romulus – the only new release
Alien: Romulus stands alone as the only new release this weekend, following the removal of Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 from the calendar. The first chapter of the saga, which had a production budget of $100 million, underperformed with a global box office of just $32 million. This disappointing result led to the postponement of the sequel’s release.
Box office competition
While Alien: Romulus is expected to secure the top spot, the battle for second place will be fierce. Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, aims to add $25 million to $27 million in its fourth weekend. The film recently crossed the $1 billion mark globally and is on track to surpass 2019’s Joker as the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history.
Meanwhile, It Ends With Us, a literary adaptation starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, is expected to bring in $23 million to $28 million in its second weekend. The film had a strong debut, earning $50 million in its opening weekend.
The making of Alien: Romulus
Originally commissioned for Hulu, Alien: Romulus was shifted to a theatrical release before filming began. The film, featuring Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, and Isabela Merced, had a production budget of $80 million. This marks the first new installment in the franchise since 2017’s Alien: Covenant, which opened to $36 million and grossed $74 million domestically and $240 million globally. The highest-grossing film in the series remains Prometheus, which debuted to $51 million in 2012 and earned $126 million domestically and $403 million globally.
Directed by Fede Alvarez, known for Don’t Breathe, Alien: Romulus is the seventh entry in the sci-fi horror franchise that began in 1979 with Ridley Scott’s Alien. The new film is set between the events of the original Alien and its 1986 sequel Aliens. It follows a group of young intergalactic colonists who encounter a terrifying life form while scavenging a rundown space station.

With a talented cast and a director known for his ability to create suspense, this latest installment is set to captivate audiences and continue the legacy of one of sci-fi’s most iconic series.
