Warner Bros. Discovery U.K. brings “Buffalo Kids” to theaters in the U.K. and Ireland
A new animated adventure hits the big screen
Warner Bros. Discovery U.K. has announced an extensive theatrical release for the Spanish animated film “Buffalo Kids” in the U.K. and Ireland. This film, produced by 4 Cats Pictures, the team behind hits like “Mummies” and “Tad the Lost Explorer,” has already made waves in Spain and is set to captivate audiences across the pond.
A box office triumph in Spain
Since its release on August 14 in Spain, “Buffalo Kids” has grossed over $5 million, making it the highest-grossing independent animated film in the country this year. With more than 740,000 admissions, it stands as the second-highest-grossing Spanish film overall. This success is a testament to the film’s appeal and the effective promotional efforts by co-producers Atresmedia Cine and A3 Media, alongside WBD Spain.
The promotional powerhouse
The marketing campaign for “Buffalo Kids” has been nothing short of ambitious. Traditional and digital media platforms were utilized to create a buzz around the film. Even a month after its release, posters of “Buffalo Kids” are still prominently displayed in metro stations and on newspaper stands in Madrid, keeping the film in the public eye.
Following in the footsteps of “Mummies”
Warner Bros. Discovery and 4 Cats Pictures are hopeful that “Buffalo Kids” will replicate the success of last year’s “Mummies”, which grossed $54 million worldwide. 4 Cats Pictures has established itself as a formidable production house in Spain, with a track record of successful films like “Capture the Flag” and the “Tad: The Lost Explorer” franchise, collectively grossing over $110 million.
A journey through 1886 America
Set in the rapidly changing United States of 1886, “Buffalo Kids” follows the story of Irish immigrant siblings Mary and Tom. Orphaned and new to New York, they are supposed to reunite with their Uncle Niall, who is to take them to California to claim an inheritance. However, when Uncle Niall fails to show up, the children embark on a cross-country adventure on the Transcontinental Railway to find him. Along the way, they are aided by a resourceful disabled boy and his governess, facing numerous challenges together.
A star-studded English-language cast
The English-language version of “Buffalo Kids” boasts an impressive cast, including Gemma Arterton, Alisha Weir, Stephen Graham, and Sean Bean. The film is produced by Jordi Gasull, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Javier Lopez Barreira, known for their work on “Mummies.”
Animation and production
The animation for “Buffalo Kids” was handled by Core Animation and 4 Cats Pictures in Spain. The film’s production partners include Atresmedia Cine, Anangu Group, and Mogambo Entertainment. International sales are managed by Beverly Hills-based Cinema Management Group (CMG), which secured the deals with Warner Bros. Discovery for the U.K., Ireland, and Italy.
A promising future
Edward Noeltner, president of CMG, expressed his excitement about the U.K. agreement, stating, “We are thrilled to see this heartfelt film make waves at the box office in Spain and find a good home with WBD UK. The results are close to the success of ‘Mummies,’ and we’re ecstatic for the filmmakers, our distributors who have bought the film, and everyone who worked so hard on it.”
