Recent research highlights a significant shift in viewer preferences, with 72% of monthly streaming viewers expressing a desire for more authentic, cross-cultural stories. This trend underscores the growing importance of diverse storytelling in the media landscape. The study, aptly named “Ads to Zeitgeist,” delves into how streaming platforms are at the forefront of this globalization of storytelling.
A new era for television and content creation
Nick Pepper, head of wholly owned content for Amazon MGM Studios, shared insights on this trend at a recent industry summit. He emphasized that the traditional broadcast model, which primarily catered to the U.S. market, is no longer the dominant force. With streaming services like Amazon’s Prime Video available in 240 countries and territories, there’s a unique opportunity to tell stories that resonate with a global audience.
“We have to look at things through an authentic lens,” Pepper noted. “It’s about finding filmmakers and storytellers who can connect with audiences on a global scale while delivering deeply meaningful narratives.”
Prime Video’s success stories
Pepper highlighted Prime Video shows like Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Hazbin Hotel as prime examples of culturally relevant storytelling. Donald Glover, who created and co-stars in “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” alongside Maya Erskine, has a knack for reimagining familiar IPs with fresh perspectives. “Donald brilliantly created a nuanced drama that paid homage to the original while exploring socially relevant themes,” Pepper said. The show’s debut at No. 4 on the Nielsen charts, with nearly 1 billion minutes watched in its first three days, is a testament to its success.
Similarly, “Hazbin Hotel,” created by Vivienne Medrano, transitioned from a YouTube sensation to a Prime Video hit. “There’s always a huge desire for the YA audience,” Pepper explained. “We saw a migration of her audience from YouTube to Prime Video, which is rare for that demographic, especially young women.”
The impact of streaming on global content consumption
The very nature of streaming services has revolutionized content consumption. Charlotte Maines, director of Fire TV business and devices advertising, discussed how Fire TV has enhanced the customer experience. With over 200 million devices sold in more than 85 countries, Fire TV’s global reach is undeniable.
Maines emphasized that customers from different cultures are eager to watch stories from around the world. “My job is to ensure that customers can watch whatever they want, whenever they want,” she said. This strategy has led to the creation of dedicated channels like Fire TV En Español, which aggregates content from 40 providers, including Univision and the Weather Channel en Español.
Twitch’s role in cultural exchange
Rachel Delphin, Chief Marketing Officer for Twitch, highlighted the platform’s growing Spanish-language audience. From 2019 to 2022, the audience for Spanish-language livestreams increased sixfold, making it the second most-spoken language on Twitch. This growth has prompted Twitch to develop more programming, such as Spanish-language panels at TwitchCon San Diego and the “Vamos!” livestream.
Twitch’s diverse audience extends beyond gaming, fostering a natural environment for cultural exchange. “When people are fans of ‘Fallout’ or ‘League of Legends,’ their shared passion for the game brings them together,” Delphin explained. This shared interest allows for meaningful interactions and cultural dialogue.

The success of platforms like Prime Video and Twitch demonstrates a growing appetite for cultural storytelling. As streaming services continue to expand their global reach, the demand for authentic, cross-cultural narratives will only increase. This trend not only enriches the viewing experience but also fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures.
