Transformers One: A rocky start
On the other hand, Transformers One had a less than stellar debut, earning $25 million from 3,978 venues. This was below the expectations for Paramount and Hasbro’s animated venture, which had a production budget of $75 million and was aiming for an opening between $30 million and $40 million. Internationally, the film added $14 million, bringing its worldwide total to $39 million.
Featuring the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, and Scarlett Johansson, Transformers One marks the franchise’s first animated theatrical release since 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie. Despite its initial box office disappointment, the film has garnered positive reviews and encouraging audience scores, suggesting that it might see a resurgence in ticket sales in the coming weeks.

The challenge of animated adaptations
David A. Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research notes that the lukewarm opening for Transformers One is somewhat expected. He explains that while industry expectations are high for a major series like Transformers, an animated adaptation is unlikely to capture the full audience of its live-action counterparts. The live-action Transformers series has amassed a staggering $5.28 billion across seven films, setting a high bar for any new installment.
Newcomers struggle to make an impact
Another new release, Never Let Go, landed in fourth place with a disappointing $4.5 million from 2,667 venues. The survival thriller, led by Halle Berry, is the latest in a series of underwhelming openings for Lionsgate. With mixed reviews and audience scores, the film’s future at the box office looks uncertain.
In sixth place, The Substance, a body-horror satire starring Demi Moore, earned $3.1 million from 1,949 theaters. Directed by Coralie Fargeat, the film explores the dark side of an aging celebrity’s quest for youth through a black market drug. Despite its modest opening, the film has received some of the best reviews of Moore’s career.
Horror and superhero films hold steady
Speak No Evil, a remake of the 2022 Danish thriller, slipped to third place with $5.9 million from 3,375 theaters. The film, starring James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis, has grossed $21.45 million in North America and $42 million worldwide to date.
Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine continues to perform well, rounding out the top five with $3.8 million from 2,450 locations in its ninth weekend. The R-rated superhero sequel, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has grossed $627 million domestically and $1.317 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.
Limited releases and future prospects
In limited release, A24’s dark comedy A Different Man grossed $56,126 from four screens in New York and Los Angeles. Directed by Aaron Schimberg and starring Sebastian Stan and Adam Pearson, the film follows an aspiring actor who undergoes a radical medical procedure to transform his face. The film will expand further on September 27.
domestic box office revenues are lagging behind previous years, with a 11.9% drop compared to the same point in 2023 and a 25.7% decline from 2019. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has been the standout performer of September, accounting for nearly half of the month’s domestic revenue.
As we look ahead to October, the box office is poised for a boost with the release of anticipated films like Joker: Folie À Deux, Saturday Night, and Anora. These upcoming releases promise to inject some much-needed excitement into the marketplace.
