‘Severance’ season 2: A long-awaited return to the mysterious world of Lumon Industries
The anticipation builds
After nearly three years of waiting, fans of the sci-fi workplace thriller Severance can finally mark their calendars. Season 2 is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on January 17, 2025. The first season left viewers on the edge of their seats with its cliffhangers, and the upcoming season promises to delve deeper into the enigmatic world of Lumon Industries.
A word from the cast and crew
John Turturro, who portrays the dedicated company man Irving, shared his excitement about the new season. “I think it’ll be a really interesting second season,” he said. “We are delving into the unknown that the audience is waiting for, and then doing it incrementally.”
For director and executive producer Ben Stiller, the three-year gap between seasons has been both a challenge and an opportunity. “It’s an interesting experience,” he remarked. “I’ve never been through it before — a second season of anything. Everything I’ve done has gotten canceled back in the day. But, you know, I feel like there’s an expectation that the audience has — that they should have if they love something. For us, it’s just been the process of trying to live up to our expectation of what we think the show should be and commit to that.”
The premise and the promise
Severance follows a group of employees at a mysterious bio-tech company whose work lives and home lives have been “severed” via an experimental procedure. The series stars Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Patricia Arquette, Zach Cherry, and Christopher Walken. The first season’s production faced delays due to the pandemic, and filming for Season 2 was further complicated by Hollywood strikes and reported creative disputes.
Stiller acknowledged the challenges, saying, “It’s been an interesting, trying time over the last few years to make things, on all levels for people. So to keep that focus on trying to make the best possible season, being aware that it’s taken a long time. I, like other people, get frustrated when things take a long time. I want to have the next season sooner. So I understand that feeling of the expectation.”
The journey of creation
Reflecting on the journey of creating Season 2, Stiller continued, “It’s taken a long time. I hope it’s good. You know, people are just wanting something to live up to what they’ve experienced and have it hopefully not let them down. And so, I don’t know, all you can do is try to do what you think is good.”
With the premiere still months away, Stiller expressed his enthusiasm, “I’m excited for it. We put everything into it. And it’s been fun to explore the story and work with these actors and [series creator] Dan Erickson. I’ve never had that experience of being with something for so long, where the characters really start to have a life and the actors understand the characters so well, and it grows into something more.”
A deeper dive into the world of ‘Severance’
For those who haven’t yet experienced the eerie allure of Severance, now is the perfect time to catch up. The series masterfully blends elements of science fiction and psychological thriller, creating a unique narrative that keeps viewers guessing. The concept of severing one’s work and personal life raises intriguing questions about identity, memory, and the nature of work itself.
The show’s visual style, characterized by its stark, minimalist aesthetic, adds to the unsettling atmosphere. The performances, particularly those of Adam Scott and Patricia Arquette, are compelling and nuanced, drawing viewers into the complex emotional landscape of the characters.
