Busan International Film Festival: A cinematic celebration amidst challenges
A grand opening and closing
The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) is set to dazzle audiences with an expanded screening program, despite facing a significant reduction in government funding. This year’s festival, running from October 2 to October 11, promises to maintain its reputation as Asia’s premier film festival by showcasing a diverse array of films.
The festival will kick off with the highly anticipated period drama Uprising, a Netflix production scripted and produced by the renowned Park Chan-wook, known for his work on “Oldboy.” Directed by Kim Sang-man, the film features a stellar cast including Gang Dong-won, Cha Seung-won, Kim Shin-rock, Jin Sun-kyu, and Jung Sung-il. The narrative revolves around a servant and his master, the son of a noble family with military ties, navigating the complexities of freedom and societal expectations. The festival selectors have praised the film for its intense conflict, tension, and Park Chan-wook’s signature humor.
The festival will close with Spirit World, directed by Eric Khoo. This film, shot in Japan, stars the iconic French actress Catherine Deneuve. Khoo’s direction promises to deliver a captivating experience, blending cultural elements and supernatural themes.
Honoring cinematic excellence
This year, the prestigious Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award will be bestowed upon Japan’s Kurosawa Kiyoshi. His films Cloud and Serpent’s Path have garnered international acclaim, with “Cloud” recently premiering at Venice and “Serpent’s Path” set for its international premiere in San Sebastian. Both films will be screened at BIFF, offering audiences a chance to appreciate Kurosawa’s masterful storytelling.
An expanded lineup
BIFF will feature a total of 224 titles, including both feature films and shorts, in its official selection. Additionally, 55 films will be part of the community outreach program. To accommodate this extensive lineup, the festival will utilize 28 screens across seven venues, including the KOFIC Theater near the main festival center in the Centum area.
Despite the high-profile nature of Korea’s entertainment sector, state funding for the arts has been slashed under the current government. This has forced the festival to seek greater commercial sponsorship and private funding. The task has been challenging, especially after last year’s internal conflicts became public. In January, veteran filmmaker Park Kwang-su was appointed as chairman, with Pak Dosin remaining as deputy director. However, the festival is still without a permanent director.
Special tributes and new sections
In the lead-up to the festival, several exciting announcements have been made. A retrospective for Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes, a tribute to the late Korean star Lee Sun-kyun, and the launch of a ‘Teen Spirit, Teen Movie’ section are among the highlights.
The festival has also revealed the selections for its two main competition sections, New Currents and Jiseok. Additionally, a new Documentary Audience Award worth KRW10,000,000 ($7,500) has been introduced, adding to the festival’s allure.
Gala screenings
The festival’s five main gala slots will feature an impressive lineup of films. In addition to Kurosawa’s “Cloud” and “Serpent’s Path,” audiences can look forward to Caught by the Tides by Jia Zhangke, Grand Tour by Miguel Gomes, and Visiting Hours by Patricia Mazuy.
Personal reflections
For cinema enthusiasts, the Busan International Film Festival is more than just a series of screenings; it’s a celebration of storytelling, culture, and artistic expression. The festival’s ability to adapt and thrive amidst financial challenges is a testament to the resilience and passion of the film community. Each film, whether it’s a high-profile gala screening or a lesser-known gem, offers a unique perspective and an opportunity to explore different worlds and narratives.
As we look forward to this year’s festival, it’s worth reflecting on the power of cinema to bring people together, spark conversations, and inspire change. Whether you’re a fan of period dramas, supernatural thrillers, or thought-provoking documentaries, BIFF promises to deliver an unforgettable experience.
