Teamsters union secures tentative deal for casting directors
A new chapter for casting directors
In a significant development for the entertainment industry, the Teamsters union has reached a tentative agreement with major studios on behalf of casting directors. This deal, which was finalized on Friday, aims to address long-standing issues related to wages and working conditions for casting professionals.
Aiming for fair wages and benefits
The contract, which covers approximately 700 members, marks a pivotal moment as the union sought to establish weekly minimum wage rates for the first time. This move is seen as a crucial step towards ensuring fair compensation for casting directors, who play an essential role in the production process.
Additionally, the negotiations focused on securing basic terms, including pension and health coverage, for the 91 casting assistants who joined the union in August. This inclusion highlights the union’s commitment to improving the overall welfare of all casting professionals.
Voices from the negotiation table
Sherry Thomas, a casting director who served on the steering committee, expressed optimism about the agreement. “We really came together and made some wonderful steps in the right direction for the future of our profession and the craft of casting,” she said. “In any negotiation, neither side is going to get exactly what they want. But if you can work toward fairness, that’s a win.”
Josh Ropiequet, an associate casting director and committee member, echoed this sentiment. “I feel very happy with the agreement,” he stated. “We are unanimously recommending this contract.”
The road to the agreement
Casting directors have been represented by the Teamsters union since 2006. Committees from two locals—399 in Hollywood and 817 in New York—have been diligently working to formulate proposals over the past several months. The negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) began in late August and involved intense discussions, including sessions that extended into the early hours of the morning.
Despite the challenges, the union’s dedication paid off. The contract, which was set to expire on September 30, was successfully renegotiated, ensuring continued protection and benefits for casting professionals.
A collective effort
The Teamsters union praised the efforts of the negotiating committee in a statement released on Friday. “Teamsters want to commend our Local 399 & 817 Casting Negotiating Committee,” the statement read. “Over the past several months, the committee has dedicated countless hours and long nights to fight on behalf of the entire casting group. The tentative agreement that was able to be achieved is in large part attributed to the hard work, passion, and fight from the committee. We also greatly appreciate the outpouring of support from all of Hollywood Labor throughout our fight and the commitment from many to #StandWithCasting.”
Looking ahead
While the specific details of the contract have not been disclosed, the union plans to hold an information meeting with members on Monday to present the terms and seek a “yes” vote on ratification. This step is crucial for finalizing the agreement and ensuring that the new terms are implemented.
The AMPTP has not yet responded to requests for comment, but the successful negotiation marks a significant achievement for the Teamsters union and the casting directors they represent. This agreement not only addresses immediate concerns but also sets a precedent for future negotiations, highlighting the importance of fair wages and benefits in the entertainment industry.
