Chappell Roan cancels performances due to health concerns
A heartfelt message to fans
Chappell Roan has announced the cancellation of her scheduled performances in Washington, D.C., and New York this weekend, which were part of the All Things Go festival. The artist shared the news on her Instagram Story, expressing her regret and explaining the reasons behind her decision.
“I apologize to people who have been waiting to see me in NYC & DC this weekend at All Things Go, but I am unable to perform,” she wrote. “Things have gotten overwhelming over the past few weeks and I am really feeling it.”
Roan emphasized the importance of prioritizing her health, stating, “I feel pressures to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health. I want to be present when I perform and give the best shows possible. Thank you for understanding. Be back soon xox.”
Addressing personal challenges
This announcement follows Roan’s candid revelations in August about her struggles with a stalker and aggressive fans. She highlighted the disturbing trend of normalizing “predatory behavior,” including nonconsensual physical and social interactions.
“Please stop touching me. Please stop being weird to my family and friends. Please stop assuming things about me. There is always more to the story. I am scared and tired,” she shared in a lengthy social media post. “I feel more love than I ever have in my life. I feel the most unsafe I have ever felt in my life.”
Balancing health and career
Roan has been vocal about the challenges of balancing her mental health with the demands of her career. In a recent statement, she discussed the pressures of the music industry and the toll it takes on artists.
“My brain is like, ‘Quit right now, take next year off.’ This industry and artistry thrive on mental illness, burnout, overworking yourself, overextending yourself, not sleeping. You get bigger the more unhealthy you are. Isn’t that so messed up?” she said. “The ambition is: How do I not hate myself, my job, my life, and do this? Because right now, it’s not working. I’m just scrambling to try to feel healthy.”
Controversy over political endorsements
The cancellation of her performances also comes amid backlash over her comments regarding the 2024 presidential election. Roan faced criticism for stating that she “doesn’t feel pressured to endorse” Kamala Harris or Donald Trump, citing issues on both sides.
“Endorsing and voting are completely different,” Roan clarified. “I don’t agree with a lot of what is going on with policies — obviously, screw the policies of the right, but also screw some of the policies on the left. That’s why I can’t endorse. That’s why I can’t put my entire name in my entire project behind one.”
Despite the controversy, Roan confirmed her voting intentions, stating, “I’m voting for Kamala, but I’m not settling for what has been offered, because that’s questionable. Screw Trump for real, but screw some of the stuff that has gone down in the Democratic party that has failed people like me and you.”
Looking ahead
Chappell Roan’s decision to cancel her performances underscores the importance of mental health and self-care, especially in the high-pressure environment of the music industry. Her openness about her struggles and her commitment to prioritizing her well-being serve as a reminder of the human side of artistry.
