A new era for ‘Chicago Med’: What to expect in season 10
Behind the scenes: A shift in leadership
The upcoming season of Chicago Med promises not only fresh faces on screen but also a significant change behind the scenes. With the departure of longtime showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider at the end of Season 9, the series is set to take on a new tone under the guidance of Allen MacDonald. Known for his work on ER, CSI, and 13 Reasons Why, MacDonald brings a wealth of experience and a unique storytelling approach to the table.
Embracing emotional storytelling with a twist
MacDonald has expressed his admiration for the emotional foundation laid by his predecessors. “The show has always been emotionally based, and that was a beautiful foundation that Andy and Diane built and maintained for nine seasons. I want to build on that because I love telling emotional stories,” he shared. However, MacDonald aims to infuse the series with a touch of humor, not through jokes but through recognizably human moments that resonate with viewers. “A laugh is an emotional reaction. It’s almost self-protective because it makes them want to cry too,” he explained.
Diving into the world of ‘Chicago Med’
To fully immerse himself in the One Chicago universe, MacDonald watched all 176 episodes of Chicago Med. “I fell in love with the world and the characters that had been created. It was generally a sandbox that I was very excited to play in,” he said. This dedication ensures that the new season will stay true to the essence of the show while introducing fresh elements.
New faces in the emergency room
Season 10 will see the introduction of new characters, including Sarah Ramos as Dr. Caitlin Lenox and Darren Barnet as Dr. Frost. These additions promise to bring new dynamics and challenges to the team.
Dr. Caitlin Lenox: Efficiency over empathy
Dr. Caitlin Lenox is described as a highly efficient professional who prioritizes getting things done on a budget. “Lenox is not a warm, cuddly person. She is very efficient and wants to get things done on a budget. A lot of people mistake her as being uncaring, but it isn’t that she is cold-hearted; she just looks at everything from a big picture perspective,” MacDonald hinted. This character’s pragmatic approach may clash with the more empathetic members of the team, creating intriguing conflicts.
Dr. John Frost: Charm with a purpose
Dr. John Frost, portrayed by Darren Barnet, is a pediatrician from a nearby hospital that’s closing. “Frost is very charming and good-looking. He knows both those things and uses them to help his patients,” MacDonald added. However, his charm doesn’t work on everyone. “The first person he met is Maggie Lockwood, and she sees right through all that and brings him down to size very quickly.” This dynamic promises to add a layer of complexity to Frost’s character and interactions.
Saying goodbye and looking forward
The new cast members come in the wake of Dominic Rains’ departure. Viewers didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to Dr. Crockett Marcel at the end of last season, but MacDonald hinted at the possibility of cameo appearances. “There’s always a chance that there will be a cameo appearance down the line by him and others as well. One thing I love about the One Chicago world is just because someone has exited the show, they’re still part of the world. And I like checking in with people.”
Mark your calendars
Chicago Med premieres on NBC Wednesday, September 25, at 8 p.m. ET. With new leadership, fresh characters, and a blend of emotional storytelling and humor, Season 10 is set to be an exciting chapter in the series.
