Clifford Bell, the renowned cabaret impresario, director, and producer, affectionately known as “Lawrence of Cabarabia,” passed away on Sunday at the age of 67 due to natural causes at CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. His publicist, Steve Moyer, confirmed the news, describing Bell as a “force of nature” who lived and breathed music until his final moments.
A life dedicated to show business
With a career spanning over four decades, Clifford Bell was a stalwart in the entertainment industry. He was known for his exceptional ability to craft and direct variety performances that featured prominent figures such as Walter Cronkite, Colin Powell, and Michael Eisner. One of his notable achievements was directing a show at the Honda Center in Anaheim and touring with Katey Sagal and her band.
Master of cabaret
Bell’s expertise in cabaret was unparalleled. He directed shows for a plethora of talented singers, including Gregg Marx, Todd Murray, Lois Bourgon, Carol Whitener, Joanne Tatham, Bonnie Gilgallon, Lauren White, Quinn Johnson, Chase Masterson, Lee Lessack, Bobbie Norman, and Katrina Aguilar. Bell’s collaborative spirit was evident in his work with Tony-nominated actress Lara Teeter. Together, they co-created the touring show “Direct From Broadway,” which starred Tony winners Debbie Gravitte and Michael Maguire. This show was a testament to Bell’s ability to blend Broadway’s grandeur with the intimate charm of cabaret.
Celebrating Barbra Streisand
One of Bell’s most cherished projects was “Our Name Is Barbra,” an annual celebration of Barbra Streisand’s birthday. This event, which has been running for 26 years, raised funds and awareness for Project Angel Food, a charity close to Bell’s heart. His final “Our Name Is Barbra” concert was held on April 24 at Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, featuring a lineup of celebrated performers. The event was also presented for the first time in Palm Springs on May 6 to benefit the Revolution Stage Company.
Advocacy for autism
Bell’s philanthropic efforts extended to autism awareness. He worked with Shannon Penrod of Autism Care Today and singer Dana Meller to establish Broadway for Autism. Additionally, he collaborated with Katrina Aguilar to bring attention to autism organizations, showcasing his commitment to using his platform for meaningful causes.

Born on September 17, 1957, in New Jersey, Clifford Bell was destined for a life in music. His father was a symphony conductor, and his mother was a concert cellist, providing him with a rich musical heritage. Bell’s influence extended beyond the stage. He wrote for Cabaret Scenes magazine and was featured alongside Chita Rivera, Bruce Vilanch, and Sam Harris in Marc Saltarelli’s 2023 documentary “Studio One Forever.” He also hosted a podcast about cabaret, served as a senior vice president at the Broadway-oriented label Fynsworth Alley, and taught cabaret at the Woman’s Club of Hollywood.
A lasting legacy
Clifford Bell is survived by his brother, Bryan Bell, a technologist and audio engineer; his stepfather, Andrew; his sister-in-law, Margarita; his nephew, Lindsay; and his nieces, Christina and Andrea. His legacy lives on through the countless performers he mentored and the audiences he enchanted.
