A surprising twist in the finale of “Colin From Accounts” Season 2
A wedding, a proposal, and a lot of emotions
As Paramount+‘s “Colin From Accounts” wraps up its second season with the finale episode “Speedy Susans,” viewers find Gordon (Patrick Brammall) and Ashley (Harriet Dyer) in a seemingly good place. However, the setting is far from ideal. They are attending the wedding of Ashley’s best friend Megan (Emma Harvie) and her fiancé Rumi (Virginia Gay), who isn’t exactly fond of Gordon.
Ashley, still recovering from wisdom teeth removal, tries to fulfill her Maid of Honor duties despite her swollen face, which she attempts to hide with an ill-advised spray tan. The day is uncomfortable for both, but things take a turn for the better at the reception. In a heartfelt moment, Gordon and Ashley exchange “I love you” for the first time, hinting at a positive end to the season.
An unexpected proposal
But the mood shifts dramatically when Gordon, perhaps a bit too tipsy, proposes to Ashley on the dance floor in front of everyone. It’s a cringe-worthy moment as Ashley, unprepared for such a public proposal, cannot accept. This awkward incident threatens to undo all the progress the couple has made over two seasons. Gordon tries to brush it off as a joke, but the damage is done. Can they recover from this?
Behind the scenes: Crafting the finale
Married co-creators Brammall and Dyer, who not only star in the series but also wrote every episode, intentionally ended the season on this cliffhanger. They wanted to leave viewers questioning whether the couple could overcome this blunder or if it would be a deal-breaker.
“We liked that it could be either,” Dyer explains. “It could be something they get through and laugh about, or it could be seismic, leading to a potential breakup and a chance to find each other again.”
Proposing at someone else’s wedding is a significant social faux pas, but Dyer notes that it was an emotional moment for Gordon. He had just spoken with Ashley’s ex-boyfriend, who regretted losing her, and Gordon realized he didn’t want to make the same mistake. Coupled with the recent loss of his father, Gordon was feeling particularly vulnerable.
Editing for impact
Initially, the episode had an even darker ending. Brammall reveals that an earlier cut showed the couple lost in the crowd, suggesting a bleak future. However, producers and editors found lighter moments to add some uplift. They also reinstated the scene where Gordon and Ashley say “I love you,” which had been cut.
“Our CBS studio executive pointed out that something was missing between Gordon and Ashley,” Dyer recalls. “We realized there was a whole scene missing and decided to put it back in.”
Another suggestion from the Australian outlet Foxtel was to add a “real wedding banger” to lift the mood. They chose ABBA’s “Waterloo,” a high-energy song that also metaphorically represented the couple’s predicament.
Looking ahead to Season 3
The unresolved finale serves another purpose: Brammall and Dyer hope it will generate demand for a third season. “We wrote that ending partly because it amused us and partly to force their hand,” Brammall says. “We think it’s working. We’re confident and are starting to plot it imminently.”
The reviews for Season 2 have been stellar, matching and even surpassing the positive reception of the first season. With a 100% “Certified Fresh” ranking on Rotten Tomatoes, the show has become a global hit, airing in Australia, the UK, and the US.
The journey of Gordon and Ashley
“Colin From Accounts” began with Gordon and Ashley meeting after causing an accident that injured a border terrier, leading to their reluctant shared custody of the dog. Season 1 focused on the “will they or won’t they” dynamic, while Season 2 explored whether they should be together.
“We delved more into each other’s pasts,” Dyer says. “The spotlight was more on Gordon this time, exploring why he’s still single in his 40s.”
Brammall adds, “Season 2 liberated us to have fun with the characters, focusing on whether Ashley would accept Gordon.”
A special cameo
The show’s success allowed for some fun cameos, including Kevin Bacon, who appears via the Cameo app to deliver a message to Brett (Michael Logo) from his parents. Brammall, who worked with Bacon’s wife Kyra Sedgwick, reached out to Bacon, who was eager to participate.
“He said yes right away,” Brammall says. “He was excited to be part of a 100% Rotten Tomatoes certified fresh show.”
