HBO greenlights ‘The Chair Company’: A new comedy series by Tim Robinson
A fresh comedic venture
HBO has officially given the green light to “The Chair Company”, a comedy series starring and co-created by the ever-hilarious Tim Robinson. Initially announced with a pilot order back in April, this project has now been elevated to a full series. Robinson, known for his unique comedic style, co-created the series with Zach Kanin, and both serve as executive producers.
Plot and cast details
The official synopsis teases, “After an embarrassing incident at work, a man (Robinson) finds himself investigating a far-reaching conspiracy.” Robinson takes on the role of William Ronald Trosper, a character that promises to deliver the quirky humor fans have come to expect from him.
The ensemble cast includes:
- Lake Bell as Barb Trosper
- Sophia Lillis as Natalie Trosper
- Will Price as Seth Trosper
- Joseph Tudisco as Mike Santini
Additionally, Lou Diamond Phillips makes a guest appearance in the pilot as Jeff Levjman.
Behind the scenes
The series boasts an impressive lineup of executive producers. Alongside Robinson and Kanin, Adam McKay and Todd Schulman are on board via HyperObject Industries. Igor Srubshchik also joins as an executive producer, while Andrew DeYoung not only executive produced but also directed the pilot.
Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO & Max Comedy Programming, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “With an imprint only Tim and Zach can have on a character, William Ronald Trosper follows in the strong tradition of HBO comedy leads. I couldn’t be happier to announce the pickup of this wildly enjoyable show.”
A week of comedy for HBO
This announcement marks the second comedy series HBO has picked up from pilot to series in the same week. The network also recently greenlit an untitled comedy from “Bottoms” co-writer and star Rachel Sennott.
Robinson and Kanin shared their excitement, saying, “We are so excited and thankful to get to make this show with HBO, HyperObject, and all of the amazing cast and crew that have helped to create it.”
A history of collaboration
Robinson and Kanin’s partnership dates back to their time together on the writing staff of “Saturday Night Live.” They later co-created the popular Comedy Central series “Detroiters” with Sam Richardson and Joe Kelly, with Robinson and Richardson starring. Their collaboration continued with the Netflix sketch comedy series “I Think You Should Leave,” which won the Emmy Award for best short form series in 2023. Robinson himself has won the Emmy for best actor in a short form series twice.
Personal reflections
As a fan of Robinson’s work, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement for “The Chair Company.” His unique brand of humor, combined with Kanin’s creative input, promises a series that will undoubtedly stand out in HBO’s comedy lineup. The premise alone—an embarrassing incident leading to a conspiracy investigation—hints at the kind of absurd, yet relatable, humor that Robinson excels at.
For those unfamiliar with Robinson’s previous work, I highly recommend checking out “I Think You Should Leave” on Netflix. It’s a masterclass in sketch comedy that showcases his ability to turn the mundane into the hilariously bizarre.
