Iberseries & Platino Industria: A pivotal event for Ibero-American audiovisual professionals
A growing hub for industry leaders
The annual Iberseries & Platino Industria event, held in Madrid from October 1-4, has rapidly become a cornerstone for professionals in the Ibero-American audiovisual sector. Co-directors Samuel Castro and Juan Alía have ambitious goals for this fourth edition, aiming not only to match last year’s 2,500 accredited participants but also to attract high-profile executives with decision-making power. “Our goal is to make this event the go-to place for business, project presentations, and strategic discussions around Spanish-language audiovisual content,” Castro emphasized.
Diverse participation and strong European presence
Early data indicates a diverse array of participants, with 647 professionals from Spain, 121 from Mexico, 96 from Colombia, 83 from the USA, and 42 from Chile. European countries like Portugal, France, and Italy also show a strong presence, although Spain remains dominant.
Major industry players and pitching sessions
The event’s conference program features significant players such as Disney+, HBO Max, Prime Video, Movistar Plus+, NBC Universal, RTVE, Atresplayer, and Caracol. The Ad Hoc Pitching Sessions will see participation from Warner Bros, Telemundo Studios, Sony, Paramount, Gaumont, Dopamine, and Secuoya Studios, among others.
Trends in TV and film
TV industry insights
Samuel Castro has observed a rise in multilateral co-productions as a popular financing model. Investment funds are increasingly interested in Spain’s industry, and there’s a growing effort to promote Hispanic-American intellectual property (IP) as a source of inspiration for new projects.
Film industry dynamics
Juan Alía notes more collaborations among Ibero-American countries and other regions, leading to larger budgets and broader distribution. There’s a clear focus on local stories with global appeal, blending specific cultural contexts with universal themes. Genres like thriller, horror, and comedy are being adapted to local sensibilities, and more female and diverse voices are emerging.
Social and political themes
Alía also highlights a stronger commitment to social, political, and environmental themes. Projects are increasingly addressing contemporary issues such as inequality, migration, and corruption, and there’s a renewed interest in exploring historical events and their modern repercussions.
New financing models and challenges
Alternative financing models like crowdfunding and private investment are being explored to complement public funds. However, challenges remain, including digital piracy, environmental sustainability during shoots, content saturation, and competition with short-form entertainment platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Financing and profitability, especially for independent productions, continue to be significant hurdles.
