A24 to bring Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart” to the screen with Idris Elba
A new adaptation of a literary classic
A24 is set to develop a TV series adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s seminal novel, “Things Fall Apart”, with Idris Elba not only starring but also taking on the role of executive producer. This exciting news marks a significant step in bringing one of literature’s most powerful stories to a new audience.
The team behind the project
While the project currently lacks a writer and has yet to be picked up by a streaming service or network, the production team is already shaping up to be impressive. Elba will executive produce through his 22Summers production banner, alongside Gina Carter. David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka will also serve as executive producers via Yoruba Saxon. Additional executive producers include Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi, and Achebe Masterworks, with A24 as the studio.
The essence of “Things Fall Apart”
The official description of “Things Fall Apart” introduces Okonkwo, portrayed by Elba, as a fearless African warrior and leader determined to preserve his people and culture. The narrative delves into Okonkwo’s struggle against British colonizers, leading to a poignant confrontation that highlights his fierce resolve—a trait that becomes his fatal flaw. This story captures the tension between strength, vulnerability, and adaptability, making Okonkwo an unforgettable character.
A literary masterpiece
“Things Fall Apart” is celebrated as one of the greatest novels ever written, translated into over 60 languages, and honored with prestigious awards such as the Nigerian National Merit Award and the Man Booker International Prize. It is the first book in Achebe’s African Trilogy, followed by “No Longer at Ease” and “Arrow of God”. Previous adaptations include a film and a miniseries, with Pete Edochie famously portraying Okonkwo in the latter.
Idris Elba’s illustrious career
Elba’s involvement in this project adds significant weight, given his impressive career. Recently, he earned an Emmy nomination for his role in the Apple series “Hijack”. He has also been nominated multiple times for his performance in the British crime thriller series “Luther” and for his guest role in the comedy “The Big C”. Elba is well-known for his portrayal of Stringer Bell in HBO’s “The Wire”, and for co-creating and starring in “Turn Up Charlie” and “In the Long Run”. His film credits include “Beasts of No Nation”, “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”, “The Harder They Fall”, “Suicide Squad”, and his role as Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
David Oyelowo’s production prowess
David Oyelowo, another key figure in this adaptation, brings his extensive experience as both an actor and producer. His production company, Yoruba Saxon, recently produced the Paramount+ series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves”, with Oyelowo starring as Reeves. Yoruba Saxon is also behind the upcoming Apple TV+ series “Government Cheese”, featuring Oyelowo. The company has produced notable films such as “The After”, “The Water Man”, “A United Kingdom”, and the documentary “Ferguson Rising”.
Anticipation builds
The anticipation for this adaptation is palpable, as it promises to bring a fresh perspective to Achebe’s timeless story. With a powerhouse team of producers and the involvement of Idris Elba, this project is poised to make a significant impact.
