BBC’s “Sherwood” returns for a thrilling third season
A new chapter for the acclaimed crime drama
The BBC’s gripping crime drama “Sherwood” has been officially renewed for a third season, much to the delight of its dedicated fanbase. Created by the talented James Graham, known for his work on the play “Dear England” and the TV series “Quiz,” the show has captivated audiences with its intense storytelling and complex characters.
Behind the scenes: the creative minds
James Graham, the mastermind behind “Sherwood,” has a rich history of creating compelling narratives. His other notable works include the play “Dear England,” which is currently being adapted for the BBC, and the critically acclaimed series “Quiz,” starring Michael Sheen. Graham’s ability to weave intricate plots and develop deep, relatable characters has made him a standout figure in the industry.
The series is produced by House Productions, with the first two seasons available on iPlayer in the U.K. and on Britbox in the U.S. The production team includes directors Clio Barnard, known for “Ali & Ava,” and Tom George, who co-directed the second season.
A stellar cast
“Sherwood” boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring David Morrissey, Monica Dolan, David Harewood, Lorraine Ashbourne, Robert Lindsay, Perry Fitzpatrick, Christine Bottomley, Michael Balogun, Oliver Huntingdon, Bethany Asher, and Lesley Manville. Each actor brings a unique depth to their character, contributing to the show’s overall success.
Inspired by real events
The series draws inspiration from the notorious “Shottingham” gang wars that plagued Nottinghamshire, where Graham grew up. This personal connection adds an authentic layer to the storytelling, making the drama even more compelling.
The creator’s vision
James Graham expressed his excitement about the renewal, stating, “It continues to be the greatest privilege to tell stories set in and inspired by the history of my home county of Nottinghamshire. Having a returning series on the BBC is pretty much every British writer’s dream, and I’m incredibly grateful for the continued passion that Lindsay, Charlotte, and Jo have for ‘Sherwood’ – and to everyone at House Productions, the most supportive producers you can have. My biggest appreciation though goes to our audiences, and I’m determined to deliver for them in a series three, which will be a new set of stories, and the continuation – and completion – of some strands I’ve been dreaming of for some time.”
BBC’s commitment to quality drama
Lindsay Salt, the BBC’s director of drama, who commissioned the third season, added, “‘Sherwood’ has quickly established itself as one of the all-time great television dramas, with its impeccable mix of characters, story, and themes that have gripped and resonated with millions of viewers across the U.K. We’re so pleased to be working with James Graham and the team to bring his exciting plans for ‘Sherwood’s third chapter to the BBC.”
Looking ahead
James Graham will return to write the third season and will also serve as an executive producer alongside Juliette Howell, Tessa Ross, and Harriet Spencer for House Productions, and Jo McClellan for the BBC. The upcoming season promises to deliver new stories while continuing and concluding some long-awaited plotlines.
