Jean Smart kicks off SNL’s 50th season with a dazzling monologue
A sparkling start to a milestone season
Jean Smart took center stage to host the premiere episode of the 50th season of the iconic sketch show, Saturday Night Live. Dressed in a glittering pink pantsuit, the “Hacks” star expressed her excitement, saying, “I can’t tell you how honored I am to be hosting the premiere episode of Season 50. It truly is incredible to be here.” With a playful grin, she added, “I haven’t gotten all dressed up and had hundreds of people clap for me in days,” a nod to her recent Emmy win for lead actress in a comedy series.
A nostalgic journey through New York
Reflecting on her early days, Smart reminisced about watching the very first episode of “SNL” and dreaming of hosting the show someday. “And this was the first Saturday that worked for my schedule,” she quipped. Recalling her beginnings in New York City as a young actress in her 20s, she humorously noted, “I always think of New York as my home, even though I have a much nicer home in L.A.”
A musical tribute to the Big Apple
Smart’s monologue took a musical turn as she broke into song, celebrating the unique sights, sounds, and even the smells of New York. “I love autumn in New York… the color of trash bags changing,” she sang, adding a humorous touch. She also mentioned seeing Mayor Eric Adams in the news, joking, “I didn’t read it, I’m sure it was something good,” despite the mayor’s recent legal troubles.
A serenade to the city and its fans
Continuing her musical tribute, Smart serenaded the audience inside Studio 8H with “I Happen to Like New York,” playfully poking fun at the city while reflecting on her popularity among lesbians. “Lesbians are obsessed with me,” she mused, showcasing her signature wit.
Celebrating Emmy success
Just weeks before her SNL appearance, Smart won the Emmy for lead actress in a comedy for her role as Deborah Vance in Season 3 of Hacks. This marked her third Emmy win for the character and her sixth overall. “It’s very humbling, it really is. And I appreciate this because I just don’t get enough attention. I’m serious,” Smart joked during her acceptance speech.
A star-studded cold open
Before Smart’s monologue, “Saturday Night Live” kicked off its 50th season with a cold open featuring the return of Maya Rudolph as Vice President Kamala Harris. The sketch also introduced Jim Gaffigan as her running mate, Tim Walz, and Andy Samberg as her husband, Doug Emhoff.
Looking ahead to a special celebration
As “SNL” celebrates its 50th season, fans can look forward to a live primetime special on February 16. The series continues to air on NBC at 11:30 p.m. ET and streams on Peacock, ensuring that audiences can enjoy the show across various platforms.
