Kamala Harris rallies Hollywood support in Los Angeles fundraiser
A star-studded afternoon in downtown LA
Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign made a significant stop in Los Angeles on Sunday, hosting her first major fundraiser in the city. The event, held at the J.W. Marriott in downtown LA, was graced by a constellation of celebrities, including Stevie Wonder, Sterling K. Brown, Lily Tomlin, Demi Lovato, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jessica Alba. Performances by Alanis Morissette and Halle Bailey added a musical touch to the gathering.
Harris’ grand entrance and heartfelt speech
The press was allowed in only for Harris’ remarks. She made a grand entrance to Beyoncé’s empowering anthem “Freedom,” with an announcer introducing her as “our next president of the United States.” The crowd responded with a standing ovation, to which Harris warmly replied, “Oh, it’s good to be home.” Although she grew up in Oakland, Harris has strong ties to Los Angeles, where she and her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, own a home in Brentwood.
Harris acknowledged the unwavering support she has received from the city throughout her political career. “I look around this room and there are people who have been with me here every step of the way,” she said, proudly referring to herself as “a proud daughter of California.”
The urgency of the upcoming election
With just 37 days until Election Day, Harris emphasized the critical nature of the upcoming election. “I know who’s here and so many of us have been involved every four years, and every four years we say, ‘This is the one’; this here’s the one,” she asserted. “This is probably the most important election in our lifetime, and it’s probably the most important in the life of our country.”
Harris dedicated a significant portion of her nearly 30-minute speech to addressing her opposition. “In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man, but the consequences of putting him back in the White House are extremely serious,” she warned. She also criticized Project 2025, a controversial set of conservative policy proposals, questioning, “Can you believe they put that thing in writing?” Harris humorously noted the large crowds at her campaign events, saying, “My crowds are pretty big.”
The stakes and the fight ahead
Harris highlighted the high stakes of this election, noting that it is different from 2016 or 2020 due to recent developments, such as the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity. “Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails,” she mused, underscoring the potential dangers.
As she concluded her speech, Harris reiterated the urgency of the moment, reminding the audience that early voting had already begun in some states. “Let me be clear, we are going to win,” she declared to massive applause. However, she also acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, “We also have our work cut out for us. This race is as close as it could be and we are the underdog. We are the underdog, and I’m running like the underdog.”
Fundraising success and next steps
The event attracted a diverse crowd, including numerous Hollywood agents and publicists. Ticket prices ranged from $500 to $250,000, and the fundraiser reportedly raised over $28 million. After her speech, Harris took time to shake hands and take photos with attendees before heading to her next campaign stop, a rally in Las Vegas on Sunday night.
