Meryl Streep set to star in TV adaptation of ‘The Corrections’
A new chapter for Meryl Streep
Meryl Streep is poised to take on her next significant television role, as she is attached to star in a series adaptation of Jonathan Franzen’s acclaimed novel, “The Corrections”. This project, which is currently in the early stages of development, has yet to secure a streaming service or network but is expected to be pitched to various platforms soon.
Bringing Franzen’s vision to the screen
Jonathan Franzen himself is adapting his novel for the screen and will serve as an executive producer. The project is being produced by CBS Studios, with Mark Roybal of wiip also on board as an executive producer. Previously, the adaptation was under the wing of Paramount Television Studios, but it was shelved in August. Nicole Clemens of PTVS was also set to executive produce before the project was halted.
A story of family and reconciliation
Originally published in 2001, “The Corrections” tells the poignant story of an elderly Midwestern couple who attempt to reunite their three adult children for a Christmas gathering, driven by the father’s deteriorating health. The novel’s exploration of family dynamics and personal struggles has resonated with readers, making it a compelling choice for a television adaptation.
Previous attempts at adaptation
This is not the first time “The Corrections” has been eyed for the screen. A film adaptation was initially planned but never came to fruition. In 2011, HBO commissioned a pilot for a series adaptation, featuring a star-studded cast including Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest, and Ewan McGregor. However, the pilot was not picked up for a full series in 2012.
Streep’s growing TV portfolio
Should this project move forward, it will add to Meryl Streep’s impressive list of television roles. Recently, she appeared in Seasons 3 and 4 of the popular Hulu comedy Only Murders in the Building, earning both Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for her performance. Streep also starred in HBO’s Big Little Lies, which garnered her additional Globe and Emmy nods.
A legacy of excellence
Widely regarded as one of the greatest actresses of all time, Meryl Streep has received a record 21 Academy Award nominations throughout her career, winning three for her roles in Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice, and The Iron Lady. Her involvement in “The Corrections” is sure to bring a high level of prestige and attention to the project.
Franzen’s literary contributions
Jonathan Franzen is no stranger to critical acclaim. In addition to “The Corrections”, his other notable works include “Crossroads”, “Purity”, “Freedom”, “Strong Motion”, and “The Twenty-Seventh City”. He has also penned several essay collections and a memoir titled “The Discomfort Zone”. This adaptation marks Franzen’s debut in television writing, adding another dimension to his illustrious career.
Industry buzz
The news of “The Corrections” series being in the works has generated significant buzz within the industry. While CBS Studios has declined to comment, the anticipation surrounding this project continues to build, especially with the involvement of such high-profile talent.
