A star-studded cast joins Elle Fanning in “Rosebush Pruning”
A fresh ensemble for a compelling narrative
Elle Fanning is set to lead an impressive cast in the upcoming film “Rosebush Pruning”, directed by Karim Aïnouz, known for his work on “Model Destino” and “Firebrand.” The film is a collaborative effort between Mubi, The Match Factory, and Fremantle’s The Apartment, and is currently being shot in Spain.
Meet the cast
Joining Fanning are several notable actors, including:
- Callum Turner (“Masters of the Air,” “The Boys in the Boat”)
- Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & The Six,” “Zola”)
- Jamie Bell (“All of Us Strangers,” “Rocketman”)
- Lukas Gage (“The White Lotus,” “Euphoria”)
- Tracy Letts (“Lady Bird,” “Ford vs Ferrari”)
- Elena Anaya (“The Skin I Live In,” “MotherFatherSon”)
- Pamela Anderson (“The Last Showgirl,” the forthcoming “The Naked Gun”)
Originally, Kristen Stewart and Josh O’Connor were set to star alongside Fanning, but they have since been replaced by Keough and Turner, respectively.
A script with depth and nuance
Aïnouz is directing from a script penned by Efthimis Filippou, known for his work on “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “The Lobster.” The screenplay is an adaptation of Marco Bellocchio’s 1965 debut feature, “Fists in the Pocket,” a dark satire that critiques family and societal values. This film is considered a landmark in Italian cinema, and Aïnouz is eager to bring this audacious narrative to life.
“I’m so excited to bring this audacious and delicious script to life, which challenges our notions of the traditional family and the patriarchy, with this brilliant ensemble of actors who I have long admired,” said Aïnouz.
Behind the scenes: production and creative team
The production is a joint effort with Viola Fügen and Michael Weber producing for The Match Factory, which is also handling worldwide sales. The adaptation rights were acquired from Kavac Film, with Simone Gattoni of Kavac Film producing. Annamaria Morelli is producing for The Apartment, while Andreas Wentz and Juan Cano “Nono” from Surfilm are co-producing in Spain, and Rachel Dargavel for Crybaby is co-producing in the U.K.
Mubi, marking its biggest step into production with “Rosebush Pruning,” is financing the film along with The Apartment, Metafilms, Anna Films, and In Bloom. Additional funding comes from the German Federal Film Board, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Medienboard, and the BFI.
