Indie film “The Easy Kind” secures global sales rights
A new star in the indie film scene
New York-based indie sales outfit Visit Films has secured worldwide sales rights to the film The Easy Kind, starring country singer Elizabeth Cook. The film received a warm reception at the Telluride Film Festival, marking a significant milestone for both the cast and crew.
A musician’s journey through middle age
In The Easy Kind, Cook plays a fictionalized version of herself, delving into the complexities of a musician navigating middle age in an industry that has yet to fully acknowledge her talent. The film’s supporting cast includes notable names such as Susie Essman, David Letterman, Karen Allen, Charles Esten, Melissa Jackson, and Catherine Curtin.
Behind the camera: Katy Chevigny’s narrative debut
The film represents the narrative feature debut of award-winning documentary filmmaker Katy Chevigny. Chevigny is known for her work on two Emmy-winning episodes of Home for A24 and AppleTV+, as well as co-directing the Emmy-nominated documentary E-Team. Her transition from documentary to narrative filmmaking brings a unique perspective to the storytelling in The Easy Kind.
Production and partnerships
Produced by Chevigny’s Big Mouth Productions in association with Forager Films, Mystic Entertainment, and Love Today Productions, the film boasts a strong production team. Producers include Chevigny, Peter Gilbert, Nikhil Melnechuk, and Natalie Farrey. The film also features a new original song by Cook, aptly titled The Easy Kind.
Chevigny expressed her excitement about the partnership with Visit Films, stating, “On behalf of the entire film team, I’m thrilled to have found dedicated partners in Visit Films. Visit have been long-time champions of filmmakers who think – and work – outside the box.”
A blend of fiction and reality
Visit Films president Ryan Kampe praised the film, saying, “The combination of Cook’s talent and Chevigny’s empathetic direction has created a truly outstanding film that blurs the border between a fictional portrayal and authentic stardom.”
The film’s casting was managed by Caroline Sinclair, CSA. The representation of the cast includes Cook by Paradigm Talent/Wasserman Music and Hillpeople Management, Essman by LKE Management, Letterman by CAA, Allen by Paradigm and Authentic, Esten by Artists & Representatives, Jackson by Strike Up The Brand, and Curtin by Artists & Representatives, Fusion Entertainment, and Sullivan Talent Group.
Visit Films’ recent acquisitions
Visit Films has been active in acquiring international distribution rights for various films. Recently, they secured the rights to Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato‘s San Sebastián title Surfacing (La Llegada Del Hijo), and worldwide sales rights, excluding German-speaking Europe and Benelux, to the Locarno title Electric Child from Swiss writer-director Simon Jaquemet.
Final thoughts
The Easy Kind is poised to make a significant impact in the indie film scene, thanks to its compelling narrative and the talented team behind it. The collaboration between Elizabeth Cook and Katy Chevigny promises a film that resonates with authenticity and emotional depth.
