Fox Entertainment’s new creative partnership with Hank Steinberg
A new chapter in scripted dramas
Fox Entertainment has recently inked a significant deal with TV writer and producer Hank Steinberg, the creative force behind the network’s upcoming midseason drama, Doc. This agreement, part of Fox’s “broadcast direct deals” initiative, will see Steinberg developing new scripted dramas exclusively for Fox, further enriching the network’s content portfolio.
A promising collaboration
The announcement was made by Michael Thorn, President of FOX Television Network, who expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership. “Hank is an invaluable creative partner and collaborator, already delivering the intense new medical procedural Doc to the network,” Thorn stated. “Expanding this relationship builds on Hank’s proven track record for creating undeniable, broad-appeal franchises, and with his incomparable voice, will bring even more incredible, unexpected entertainment to Fox’s audiences worldwide.”
Steinberg’s career is marked by a series of successful projects, including CBS’s seven-season police procedural Without a Trace, TNT’s post-apocalyptic drama The Last Ship, and ABC’s social justice legal drama For Life.
The journey of ‘Doc’
Reflecting on his experience with Fox, Steinberg shared, “The experience of working on Doc with Michael, Brooke Bowman, and the entire Fox team has been one of the most rewarding of my career. Their passion and support from the moment we pitched the show has been unwavering, and Michael’s clarity and vision as the distributor of the content creates such a cohesive dynamic within which to work. I’ve always admired the risk-taking of Fox’s brand within the realm of network programming, and I really look forward to continuing and expanding on our success together.”
Doc, which Steinberg is executive producing alongside showrunner Barbie Kligman and Erwin Stoff, is based on the Italian series Doc – Nelle tue mani. The series stars Molly Parker as a doctor who must recalibrate her life after a brain injury erases the last eight years of her memory. The show is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment Studios. For more details, you can watch the Doc trailer.
Expanding the creative roster
Fox’s “broadcast direct deals” initiative has also attracted other notable talents. This includes writer/producer Dan Harmon, known for Community; producer/actor Denis Leary of Rescue Me fame; Academy Award-winning filmmaker Rodney Rothman, who worked on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse; creator/writer/producer Matt Nix from Burn Notice; and writer/producer Justin Adler, known for Life in Pieces. Harmon’s deal led to the creation of the animated Fox comedy Krapopolis, while Leary is behind the upcoming midseason comedy Going Dutch.
Steinberg’s illustrious career
Hank Steinberg’s career is a testament to his versatility and creativity. His credits include the 2001 HBO film 61, the biographical drama RFK for FX, and the creation and executive production of ABC’s The Nine, which he co-wrote with his sister, KJ Steinberg. In 2010, Steinberg’s novel Out of Range was published by HarperCollins, which he later adapted into a screenplay for Paramount Pictures.
A personal reflection
As a cinema and TV series enthusiast, it’s fascinating to witness the evolution of network programming through such strategic partnerships. Steinberg’s ability to craft compelling narratives that resonate with a broad audience is a significant asset for Fox. His work on Doc promises to deliver a gripping medical drama that explores the human condition in profound ways. The collaboration between Steinberg and Fox is poised to bring fresh, innovative content to our screens, continuing the tradition of high-quality storytelling that both parties are known for.
