Asian World Film Festival marks its 10th anniversary with a vibrant celebration
Spotlight on excellence and innovation
The Asian World Film Festival (AWFF) returns for its milestone 10th edition from November 13-20 at the Culver Theater in Culver City. This year’s festival promises a diverse lineup, celebrating the cream of Asian cinema. The grand culmination on November 21 will take place at the Directors Guild of America complex, featuring a gala and prestigious awards ceremony.
Opening night delight: A critically acclaimed Korean drama
Kicking off the festival is “A Normal Family”, directed by Hur Jin-ho, renowned for cinematic gems like “The Last Princess” and “Happiness.” Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, this Korean drama is based on Herman Koch’s bestseller “The Dinner” and promises compelling performances by Sul Kyung-gu and Jang Dong-gun. Film aficionados eagerly anticipate this gripping narrative that explores the complexities of familial bonds and moral dilemmas.
Celebrating heritage: Honoring a timeless icon
This year’s theme, heritage, is a tribute to a decade of cinematic excellence. AWFF executive director Georges N. Chamchoum emphasized that this theme reflects the festival’s dedication to honoring the rich past of Asian cinema while also championing contemporary and emerging talents. A highlight of this celebration is a tribute to the legendary Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong. The festival will screen the 1924 classic, “The Thief of Bagdad,” featuring Wong—a pioneering figure whose legacy continues to inspire. Her niece, Anna Wong, will also be present for an intimate Q&A session, offering unique insights into the actress’s life and career.
Highlighted films and stellar appearances
Concluding the festival on a high note is the Filipino romantic drama “Hello, Love, Again”, the much-anticipated sequel to “Hello, Love, Goodbye.” Directed by Cathy Garcia-Sampana and starring the beloved duo Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards, this film promises to enchant audiences with its tender storytelling. Fans will be thrilled to learn that both the director and the stars will grace the screening with their presence, making it an unmissable event.
New programs enhancing the festival experience
This year, AWFF introduces two innovative programs: Asian Vision and Focus On.
-
Asian Vision is designed to spotlight films that have garnered critical acclaim at prestigious international festivals. This program will culminate in the presentation of the Asian Vision Best Film Award, highlighting the best of the best in the cinematic world.
-
Focus On aims to celebrate the unique culture, customs, and traditions of various countries and regions. This edition will feature films from Hong Kong, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Taiwan, and Vietnam, with other regions to be announced. This program offers viewers a deeper understanding of the diverse narratives and cultural tapestries within Asian cinema.
Main competition program and renowned awards
The festival’s main competition will showcase films submitted by Asian countries for the Oscar’s international film race and the Golden Globes’ non-English language category. This prestigious competition underscores AWFF’s role in promoting and recognizing the finest cinematic works from Asia.
As the festival closes, the Snow Leopard Trophies will be awarded, recognizing excellence in various categories including Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Cinematography. Additionally, the Special Jury Prize and Audience Award will be bestowed, celebrating outstanding achievements and fan favorites alike.

The Asian World Film Festival, over the past decade, has cemented its position as a beacon for Asian cinema, providing a platform for filmmakers to showcase their craft and for audiences to experience the rich and diverse cinematic heritage of Asia.
