A24 unveils trailer for new thriller “Babygirl”
Nicole Kidman shines in Venice-winning performance
A24 has just released the highly anticipated trailer for its latest erotic thriller, Babygirl. The film, which premiered in competition at the 81st Venice Film Festival on August 30, is set to hit theaters nationwide on Christmas Day. Nicole Kidman, who stars in the film, won the Best Actress prize at Venice for her compelling performance.
A tale of forbidden desires
The official synopsis reveals that Babygirl centers around Kidman’s character, a high-powered business executive who risks everything—her career and family—when she embarks on a passionate affair with her much younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson. The supporting cast includes notable names such as Antonio Banderas, Sophie Wilde, Esther McGregor, Victor Slezak, Vaughan Reilly, and Leslie Silva.
Exploring the duality of human nature
Writer-director Halina Reijn, speaking at the Venice Film Festival, shared her vision for the film: “All of us carry a little black box filled with taboo fantasies that we might never share with anyone. I am fascinated by the duality of human nature, and this film is an attempt to shine a light, without judgment, on the opposing forces that make up our personalities. To me, feminism is the freedom to study a woman’s vulnerability, love, shame, rage, and inner beast.”
A24 and Reijn: A fruitful collaboration
Babygirl marks the third collaboration between Reijn and A24. Their partnership began with Reijn’s directorial debut, Instinct, in 2019, followed by Bodies Bodies Bodies in 2022. Reijn not only directed but also served as the screenwriter and producer for Babygirl. The film’s executive producers include Christine D’Souza Gelb, Erika Hampson, and Zach Nutman, with David Hinojosa and Julia Oh also producing.
A deeper dive into the film’s themes
The complexity of forbidden love
Babygirl delves into the intricate dynamics of forbidden love and the consequences that arise from crossing societal boundaries. The film’s narrative challenges viewers to confront their own perceptions of morality and the often blurred lines between right and wrong. Kidman’s portrayal of a woman torn between her desires and responsibilities adds a layer of depth to the character, making her journey both relatable and thought-provoking.
The role of power dynamics
The film also explores the power dynamics inherent in relationships, particularly those with significant age and status differences. Kidman’s character, as a top-level executive, holds a position of authority over her intern, played by Dickinson. This imbalance adds tension and complexity to their relationship, raising questions about consent, manipulation, and the true nature of their connection.
Feminism and vulnerability
Reijn’s approach to feminism in Babygirl is nuanced and multifaceted. By examining a woman’s vulnerability alongside her strength, the film presents a holistic view of female empowerment. Reijn’s statement about feminism being the freedom to explore a woman’s full range of emotions and experiences is evident in the film’s portrayal of Kidman’s character. Her journey is one of self-discovery, as she navigates the conflicting forces within her.
