Banijay Rights brings a powerful documentary to Mipcom
Exploring environmental activism through a lens of sacrifice
Banijay Rights, in collaboration with Banijay Iberia’s Diagonal TV and Crescendo Media Production, is set to unveil a profoundly moving documentary, “The Silence of the Earth,” at Mipcom later this month. This feature documentary delves into the harrowing stories of three courageous environmental activists whose lives were tragically cut short due to their relentless fight against environmental destruction and corporate greed.
The powerful narrative of “The Silence of the Earth”
Directed by Eulogio Romero, “The Silence of the Earth” examines the lives and untimely deaths of activists Berta Cáceres, Paulo Paulino Guajajara, and Aldo Zamora. By blending investigative thriller elements with deeply human cinematic drama, the documentary illuminates the dark forces behind their assassinations and their unwavering commitment to safeguard our planet.
A closer look at the victims’ stories
Berta Cáceres was a formidable Honduran activist and Indigenous leader who co-founded the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras. Her advocacy earned her the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2015, but her life was tragically ended in 2016 when she was killed in her home by assassins with alleged U.S. military connections.

Paulo Paulino Guajajara, also known as “Lobo,” was a Brazilian activist and a member of the Guardians of the Forest. He stood firm against illegal logging operations, but in 2019, he and his cousin were ambushed by loggers. This attack resulted in Paulo’s death and severe injury to his cousin.
Aldo Zamora, influenced by his legendary activist father Ildefonso Zamora, joined Greenpeace Mexico along with his brother Misael. The two brothers actively denounced illegal logging, but in 2007, Aldo was ambushed and murdered by the very loggers he opposed.
Shedding light on systemic issues
“The Silence of the Earth” provides unprecedented access to the individuals closest to these fallen heroes. By exploring their lives, the documentary reveals the local power structures and the unchecked corporate greed that enable such tragic events to occur with impunity. Moreover, it broadens the discussion to the global implications of environmental destruction, showing that these issues transcend national borders.
Thematic elements and production insights
Thematically, “The Silence of the Earth” functions as an investigative thriller. However, at its core, it remains a heart-wrenching drama, uncovering the real-life ramifications of unchecked corporate power, human rights abuses, and the ensuing climate crisis.

The broader impact of environmental destruction
By narrating these stories, “The Silence of the Earth” impresses upon its audience the dire need for action against environmental destruction. It highlights the intersection of corporate power, human rights, and climate change. The documentary’s release at Mipcom aims to spark global conversations and incite necessary actions.
