BBC studios expands and diversifies its global footprint
Greek adaptations of popular BBC shows
In a strategic move to globalize its content, BBC Studios Global Entertainment has announced the licensing of two of its acclaimed series for Greek adaptations. The riveting psychological drama “Doctor Foster” and the comedic delight “Ghosts” are set to entertain Greek audiences soon.
Doctor Foster: An intricate psychological drama
The BAFTA-winning series “Doctor Foster” will now find its way to Greek screens with renowned actress Marilita Lambropoulou in the lead role and Nikos Kouris playing her husband. This enthralling drama, originally penned by Mike Bartlett and produced by Drama Republic, revolves around a doctor’s seemingly perfect life that spirals out of control upon discovering her husband’s infidelity.
Having already been adapted successfully in countries like France, Japan, the Philippines, Slovakia, South Korea, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and Turkey, the Greek version will be produced by ANT1 TV and Silverline Media Productions, promising to uphold the intense narrative and intricate character portrayals.
Ghosts: A hauntingly humorous series
Adding to the excitement, the beloved comedy series “Ghosts”, initially produced by Monumental Television in association with Them There for BBC One, will also be adapted for Greek viewers. The local version, scripted by celebrated Greek screenwriter Theodore Petropoulos and produced by Tanweer Productions, revolves around a young couple inheriting a haunted mansion. Set to air on Star Channel in autumn 2025, this adaptation is anticipated to mix humor with a touch of the supernatural, keeping audiences thoroughly entertained.
Technical excellence in adaptation
The adaptation process involves not just translating scripts but also ensuring the narrative aligns with local cultural nuances. For “Doctor Foster”, maintaining the psychological tension and emotional depth is critical. The original series’ success lay in its brilliant storytelling and character dynamics, elements that the Greek version must preserve to captivate its audience.
For “Ghosts”, the challenge lies in balancing humor with the supernatural elements, ensuring that cultural references and comedic timing resonate well with Greek viewers without losing the essence of the original.
