Obluda Films embraces the sci-fi detective saga ‘Resurrection’
Bi Gan’s visionary direction
Obluda Films, an independent film production company based in New York, has stepped on board the long-awaited sci-fi detective film Resurrection, directed by the renowned Chinese auteur Bi Gan. The collaboration sees Obluda joining as co-producer and co-financier, in tandem with other international partners, marking an exciting chapter in the film’s journey.
Star-studded cast and notable contributors
Playing lead roles in Resurrection are Jackson Yee, a celebrated pop star turned actor from mainland China, and Taiwan’s acclaimed Shu Qi. Adding further credibility to the production is New York-based indie producer Jonathan Daniel Brown from Party Crasher Films, who has also taken up the mantle as co-producer.
Resuming the film journey
Having completed part of its shooting, Resurrection is poised to resume filming in the fourth quarter of this year. With Les Films du Losange handling international sales and distribution, the film is set on a path to captivate global audiences.
The surreal narrative
Resurrection tells a compelling story of a woman whose consciousness is suspended in an eternal time zone during a medical procedure. Trapped in a dreamscape, she encounters an android corpse and begins recounting stories in an attempt to awaken it. As the android navigates these tales, it embarks on a surreal journey of self-discovery, evoking themes of consciousness and existentialism.
Expertise behind the scenes
Founded by Jeff Lichtenstein and operated by Ren Guang and Kaustubh “Vick” Singh, Obluda Films aims to highlight stories from underrepresented communities around the world. The company expressed enthusiasm in partnering with Bi Gan’s Dangmai Films, recognizing the high caliber of the cast and crew involved.
“We’re thrilled to join forces on Resurrection, a groundbreaking sci-fi film,” Ren and Singh stated. “Beyond telling a powerful story, we’re proud to introduce compelling Asian filmmakers to the dynamic energy of New York’s film scene.”
Return of the master
Resurrection marks Bi Gan’s first feature film since his acclaimed 2018 Cannes project, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, known for its astonishing 59-minute single-take sequence in 3D. The filmmaker’s unique style is poised to shine once again in this latest venture.
Reuniting with trusted collaborators
Bi Gan is reuniting with key crew members for this project, including cinematographer Dong Jingsong, known for The Wild Goose Lake, production designer Tu Nan from Blossoms Shanghai, and costume designer Huang Wen-Ying from The Assassin. This ensemble of experts promises a visually captivating experience.
From Kaili Blues to international acclaim
Bi Gan, a photographer and poet, initially made waves with his debut feature Kaili Blues. The 2015 film garnered significant recognition, including two awards at Locarno, establishing Bi as a visionary filmmaker. His return with Resurrection is highly anticipated, a testament to his evolving artistry and storytelling prowess.
