New directions for ‘God of War’ Amazon TV series
Exciting changes are afoot as the “God of War” TV adaptation at Amazon unveils a new creative lead.
Ronald D. Moore steps into the spotlight
Renowned for his profound storytelling mastery, Ronald D. Moore has been announced as the new showrunner, writer, and executive producer for Amazon’s highly-anticipated “God of War” series. Moore is stepping into this role following the departure of the original showrunner, Rafe Judkins.
Shifts in the creative team
Rafe Judkins’ exit, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, marked a significant change in the series’ trajectory. Despite their contributions to multiple scripts, both Amazon and studio partner Sony Pictures Television decided to pursue a new creative direction for the adaptation.
Moore’s storied background
Moore brings with him a wealth of experience and a history of creating compelling narratives. Recently re-attaching himself to Sony Pictures Television, Moore signed a new overall deal following his stint with Disney and 20th Television. His earlier tenure with Sony saw him produce iconic shows such as “Outlander” and “For All Mankind”.
Currently, an Outlander prequel series and a For All Mankind spinoff are in production, showcasing Moore’s enduring impact in the television industry.
A legacy in science fiction
Moore’s portfolio extends deeply into the science fiction genre, contributing significantly to the “Star Trek” franchise with “Next Generation,” “Voyager,” and “Deep Space Nine.” His writing prowess is also evident in “Star Trek: Generations” and “Star Trek: First Contact.” Moore’s signature work, the reboot of “Battlestar Galactica,” ran for four spectacular seasons on Syfy, garnering critical acclaim and spawning two TV movies before concluding in 2009.
The creative leadership team
Maintaining the continuity of the project, Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Barlog continues as an executive producer, along with Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from Playstation Productions, Yumi Yang from Santa Monica Studio, and Roy Lee from Vertigo. Additionally, Jeff Ketcham of Santa Monica Studio has been appointed co-executive producer. The show snagged its series order at Amazon Prime Video in 2022.
The epic journey of Kratos
Rooted in the critically-acclaimed 2018 video game developed by Santa Monica Studio, the series delves into the mythic journey of Kratos, the vengeful God of War. Leaving his blood-stained past in ancient Greece behind, Kratos relocates to the Norse realm of Midgard where he vows to lay down his weapons. However, the death of his beloved wife drives him to undertake an arduous quest with his estranged son Atreus. This journey, intended to honor his wife’s last wish of spreading her ashes from the highest peak, transforms into a perilous odyssey testing the boundaries of their father-son bond. Along the way, Kratos battles new gods and monstrous entities, shaping the world’s fate.
