Harrison Ford embraces his Marvel debut, debunks movie star myth
Harrison Ford, a titan of Hollywood, has graced us with unforgettable characters like Han Solo and Indiana Jones. Now, as he steps into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) at the age of 82, Ford is ready to take on a new role as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross / Red Hulk in the anticipated “Captain America: Brave New World”. Here’s what he had to say about his Marvel journey and the changing landscape of Hollywood.
Diving into the Marvel universe
When speaking about his decision to join the MCU, Ford didn’t mince words. “It would be silly to avoid Marvel when it’s something moviegoers have clearly responded to for years now,” he remarked. He likened his entry into this expansive universe to being a “sailor new to this town,” acknowledging the benefits of embracing change.
“I’m participating in a new part of the business that, for me at least, I think is really producing some good experiences for an audience. I enjoy that.”
In his words, Ford emphasized the dynamic nature of the film industry, urging against regrets and advocating for adaptation.
The death of movie stars?
Prominent directors have voiced concerns that the rise of superhero franchises has led to the decline of traditional movie stars. Quentin Tarantino, for instance, has argued that actors like Chris Evans are more recognizable as their superhero characters than as standalone movie stars. But Ford vehemently disagrees.
“Oh, I think it’s rubbish,” he declared when asked about the so-called death of Hollywood movie stars.
To Ford, the concept of a movie star is irrelevant. He sees himself as an actor and a storyteller, attributing the discovery of new stars to the evolving demands of cinema.
“If movies need stars, they will find them. I’ve never understood being a movie star. I’m an actor. I tell stories.”
Comedy in Ford’s eyes
Surprisingly, Ford considers himself a comedian. This might come as a shock given his roles in intense dramas like Blade Runner, The Mosquito Coast, and Witness — the latter earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
“As far as I’m concerned, everything I’ve ever done is comedy,” Ford admitted.
He explains that finding humor in any moment, be it in a serious movie or a streaming comedy, is what makes those scenes more relatable and enjoyable. This approach has been his secret ingredient throughout his illustrious career, spanning six decades and over sixty films.
A look at “Shrinking”
Ford’s humor is also making waves on the small screen with the Apple TV+ comedy series Shrinking. As Season 2 is set to premiere on October 16, Ford is excited about this venture into television comedy. It’s clear that his knack for comic timing is no accident; it’s deeply ingrained in his professional philosophy.
“I always enjoyed humor. I loved jokes. I loved the construction of jokes. My father was a joke teller.”
His passion for both serious drama and comedy has allowed him to balance and blend these genres seamlessly, viewing each role through the same lens, be it for a joke or an emotional scene.
The future in the MCU
With “Captain America: Brave New World” slated for a February 14, 2025 release, Ford’s portrayal of Red Hulk is highly anticipated. This new chapter in Ford’s career showcases his willingness to evolve continuously and embrace the ever-changing tides of the entertainment world.
