Janelle Monáe: Embracing the thrill of horror and becoming the halloqueen
A lifelong passion for horror
Janelle Monáe’s love for horror is no secret. As she enthusiastically explains, “I have had the biggest infatuation with horror, the unknown, mystery, psychological thrillers since I was a child.” It’s no wonder, then, that her childhood was filled with spooky activities, including wearing Halloween costumes well past October and even sleeping in a Child’s Play Chucky mask until it was mysteriously stolen.
Taking horror to the next level with AMC’s FearFest

Creating unforgettable Halloween moments
Monáe’s involvement in horror doesn’t stop with FearFest. Her love for elaborate Halloween costumes rivals that of even the biggest Halloween enthusiasts. Every year, she wows fans with intricate and imaginative outfits. Past costumes have included iconic characters like Diva Plavalaguna from The Fifth Element and a headless bride. This year, she teases an exciting new costume, hinting at a film character but keeping further details under wraps.
Introducing Monáe Manor and future projects
In addition to her Halloween attire, Monáe is also delving into the interactive side of horror. She’s behind Monáe Manor, a haunted house experience at Los Angeles’ Haunted Hayride. However, Monáe’s horror influence extends beyond just events—she is also set to produce and star in a Medusa-inspired film titled Don’t Look through Universal and Wondaland Pictures.
Dedication to the craft
When asked about her connection to horror, Monáe speaks passionately about her love of storytelling. As an actor and artist, she thrives on creating and experiencing captivating narratives. Horror, in particular, is a genre where she finds comfort: “I find my comfort in watching horror films and creating horror films. I have a TV and film production company, I have a haunted house experience. So I guess I would say I was made like this.”
Hosting FearFest: A dream role
Hosting FearFest was an opportunity Monáe couldn’t pass up. “I would be a fool to not accept AMC’s invitation to be the Halloqueen. FearFest is legendary, it’s iconic.” The collection she handpicked includes films that evoke fond memories from her own childhood, making this role a deeply personal one.
“I handpicked a collection that embodies why I love horror,” Monáe explains. “It’s about the beautiful memories of my cousins and I watching these films. It brings people together, allowing them to bond over shared scares and thrills.”
Reflecting on childhood horror favorites
Monáe recalls how A Nightmare on Elm Street made a lasting impact on her, even causing a nosebleed during one particularly intense scene. The horror didn’t end there—Stephen King’s It also left a chilling mark, making her wary of sewer drains and clowns for years to come.
Costume planning: A meticulous process
Monáe puts incredible thought into her Halloween costumes, planning them years in advance. “The costume I’m going to wear this year, I knew what it was going to be two years ago.” She collaborates closely with her prosthetics special effects team, spending long hours perfecting every detail while immersing herself in classic horror films and scores.
Horror on the big screen
Monáe’s foray into horror films isn’t limited to hosting. She has also taken on roles in horror projects, like Antebellum. Reflecting on the project, she shares: “First of all, it was one of the most difficult films I’ve ever shot. We were in New Orleans on this haunted plantation. To some, it might become a cult classic; to others, it won’t. That’s the nature of art.”
Looking ahead: New musical endeavors
While horror remains a central passion, Monáe continues to pursue her musical career with vigor. Following her recent album The Age of Pleasure, she hints at new music on the horizon. “There is music that haunts me in my nightmares. I have so many ideas and sounds that I have nightmares about—the most beautiful nightmares.”
During this creative season, Monáe is bursting with inspiration, eager to share her next musical venture when the time is right.
