Jesse L. Martin teases musical moment in next season of ‘The Irrational’
When one thinks of science and crime-solving, musical numbers typically don’t come to mind. But this season of NBC’s “The Irrational” is set to challenge that notion, as a surprising twist promises to delight fans of both mystery and musicals.
A surprising twist in investigative drama
Premiering on October 8, the new season of The Irrational has already captivated audiences with its intriguing plot and complex characters. However, it’s not just the psychological puzzles and behavioral analyses that are making waves. Jesse L. Martin, who stars as the brilliant behavioral scientist Alec Mercer, hints at an unexpected use of his talents – singing.
Revisiting Broadway’s influence
For those unfamiliar with Martin’s background, he’s a seasoned performer with a significant Broadway history. Most notably, Martin shone as Tom Collins in the iconic musical Rent, showcasing his superb vocal abilities. This season, Martin teases that his character may tap into some of these musical skillsets.
“Obviously, people are well aware of my time and love for Broadway, and I’ve certainly had a chance to do, you know, a musical or two, one of them being quite iconic,” Martin shares.
A scientist with a musical past
Martin elaborates on Alec Mercer’s history, revealing that his character once participated in a college singing group. This detail adds a fascinating layer to Mercer’s character, blending his scientific intellect with an unexpected creative side.
“There is a backstory with Alec, where in college he was part of a singing group. But I think the scientist and the grown man in Alec doesn’t see himself in, you know, that capacity, at least not for public consumption,” Martin continues.
However, fans of Martin’s musical talents won’t be disappointed. The actor promises moments of melody in the series, though in a unique way that harmonizes with Mercer’s character development and storyline.
“That being said, I can tease that for all of you who are quite interested in seeing or hearing a little singing – you may get your wish, but you will get your wish from a scientist. I don’t know what it means when scientists sing, but that’s what you’re going to find out.”
Complex dynamics and interpersonal relationships
Beyond the musical tease, this season delves deeper into Alec’s personal and professional life. The show interweaves emotional and multifaceted relationships, adding depth to Mercer’s character.
Rose, played by Karen David, is a significant romantic and professional counterpart to Alec. The complexities of their relationship bring a rich narrative texture.
“Alec already puts himself in dangerous positions just doing the work that he’s done, before ever even meeting Rose. The scope of dangerous potential that Rose has doing her work, and then coupling together romantically and work-wise, leads to some fantastically complex and very interesting stories,” Martin notes.
The show also continues to explore Alec’s past with his ex, Marisa (Maahra Hill). While Martin assures viewers that a love triangle is not on the horizon, their interconnected stories promise to intrigue.
Key support from Phoebe
Molly Kunz’s character, Phoebe, remains a pivotal part of Alec’s narrative, offering emotional and strategic support. Martin commends Kunz’s performance and emphasizes Phoebe’s significance to the show’s ongoing storyline.
“Phoebe’s not going anywhere. I won’t give away where she ends up or what she ends up doing, but she’s an absolutely valuable character and a fantastic actor in Molly. She is such a goldmine when it comes to telling these stories, and she lives so deeply emotionally in these stories that we need her there. Alec certainly needs her.”
