Joe Locke’s thrilling transformation in ‘Agatha All Along’
As the fifth episode of Agatha All Along hit Disney+, fans were treated to a jaw-dropping reveal. The episode, titled Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power, unveiled that Joe Locke’s character, Teen, is actually Billy, the son of Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch. This twist has long been anticipated, yet it still managed to leave viewers in shock, especially as a Scarlet Witch-like crown manifested on Billy’s head.
A sigh of relief for Joe Locke
Joe Locke can breathe easy after keeping this secret under wraps for so long. Reflecting on the moment, Locke shared his relief: “It’s so nice. I feel like I’m breathing. I love it.” In preparation for the episode’s release, Locke even took four doses of melatonin to calm his nerves and get some sleep.
Living in the UK, Locke faced a peculiar challenge: “The episode drops at 2:00 a.m. I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep, so I decided to drug myself and wake up to my phone blowing up, which it did.” The secrecy surrounding his character’s true identity was finally lifted, marking a milestone for both Locke and fans alike.
Billy’s dark turn
In a dramatic turn of events, Billy (Wiccan) reveals a more sinister side by using his powers to trap Agatha (Kathryn Hahn), Lilia Calderu (Patti Lupone), and Jennifer Hale (Sasheer Zamata) in a pit of sinking mud. This act paints Billy in a somewhat villainous light.
Locke explained, “The show starts with Billy being very much the familiar, the secondary to all the witches. Now we know he is also a witch, and that changes things.” This revelation shifts the dynamics within the group, with Billy now emerging as the most powerful individual.
Exploring character dynamics
Addressing the complex moral layers of his character, Locke said, “At the end of episode 5, we don’t know what happens to those witches, but he’s not doing a good thing. We explored whether this makes him a bad person or if he’s a good person doing bad things.”
The parallels to the maternal figures in Billy’s life add further depth. Wanda, for example, commits evil acts but isn’t inherently evil. Agatha’s morality is also in question. Locke’s portrayal of Billy masterfully captures these nuances, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. “The facade of the fanboy teen, is that completely fake or is that actually still a real part of him? This is what I found so interesting in playing him,” he added.
Studying Scarlet Witch
Given Billy’s lineage and the similarity of their powers, Locke immersed himself in understanding Wanda’s movements. Collaborating with Jennifer White, Elizabeth Olsen’s movement coach, Locke aimed to capture the essence of Scarlet Witch’s abilities. “We worked to find similarities in both Billy and Wanda, the way they use their magic,” Locke revealed.
Fans of the comics will recognize that Billy’s powers are strikingly similar to Wanda’s, with minor differences. Locke mirrored Olsen’s hand gestures in pivotal scenes, ensuring a seamless connection between mother and son. He added, “In the script, it was written as ‘with a familiar-looking hand gesture, Teen swipes Agatha off the Road.'”
