Celebrities unite to empower Black voters with new campaign
Iconic voices join forces for a historic endeavor
In an unprecedented move, John Legend, Kerry Washington, Stevie Wonder, and LeToya Luckett-Coles are amplifying their voices to support Kamala Harris‘ campaign. This initiative is part of a groundbreaking radio effort designed specifically to engage Black voters across the United States.
The “I Will Vote” campaign
As part of the first-ever seven-figure “I Will Vote” ad campaign by a Democratic presidential candidate, these influential figures will feature in advertisements appearing in 55 Black publications and aired on 48 Black radio stations nationwide. The campaign emphasizes the Democratic Party’s commitment to crucial issues such as lowering prescription drug prices, ensuring access to reproductive healthcare, and fostering an inclusive economy.
Powerful messages from influential voices
“This is Kerry Washington, and I am here to remind you that your vote is your voice, and your voice is your power,” articulates the Scandal actress and activist in her heartfelt message. “If you want an economy that works for all of us, if you want to lower the cost of living, if you want a president that puts us and our communities first, then you got to get out and vote.”
LeToya Luckett-Coles adds a poignant note by stating, “Y’all, there are several women in states across this country that are literally dying because they rolled away our rights to reproductive health care. We have to show up to the polls, and we have to vote. We have to speak up. We have to show up. We can be the change.”
John Legend stresses the importance of voting, sharing, “Voting is the best way to make sure we get the progress that we’re looking for.” Meanwhile, Stevie Wonder underscores the gravity of each election, “This election, all elections, are so important. It determines our future.”
Reaching the heart of the Black community
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) showcases its dedication to Black voters through this significant investment. According to DNC Chair Jaime Harrison, the campaign aims to connect with Black voters on familiar and trusted platforms, ensuring they have the necessary resources to participate in what is deemed “the most important election of our lifetimes.”
Engaging with young Black voters
The campaign’s launch coincided with substantial efforts to engage young Black voters at Spelman College and Morehouse College’s Spelhouse Homecoming. This event marked the final stop of the DNC’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Homecoming Tour, conducted in partnership with BET We V.O.T.E.
Beyoncé joins the movement
On Friday, Kamala Harris reached even more voters through a rally in Houston where Beyoncé lent her star power to the cause. Speaking not as a superstar but as a concerned citizen, she remarked, “We are at the precipice of an enormous shift. I’m here as a mother who cares about the world our children live in, a world where we have the freedom to control our bodies, a world where we are not divided.”
The 32-time Grammy-winning singer passionately added, “We’re all part of something much bigger. We must vote and we need you.” Her appearance put an end to months of speculation regarding her public endorsement of Harris, further bolstered by her anthem “Freedom” becoming integral to the Harris campaign.
A united front for change
The concerted efforts of these celebrities, along with their powerful and impassioned messages, aim to galvanize Black voters and foster a sense of urgency and unity. Their commitment stands as a testament to the importance of this election and the profound impact every single vote can have on shaping the future.
