The box office buzz: how “Joker: Folie à Deux” fared in its debut
A Lackluster Start for the Highly Anticipated Sequel
“Joker: Folie à Deux” made its highly anticipated debut at the box office, but the initial numbers are less than stellar. Despite topping the charts with $40 million, this genre-bending sequel to the billion-dollar hit “Joker” fell short of early projections, which ranged from $50 million to $65 million. These figures were even lower than the initial $70 million hoping for just weeks prior to the release.
Comparison with Its Predecessor
To put this in perspective, the original “Joker” broke October records back in 2019 with a massive $96.2 million opening weekend. The underwhelming start for “Folie à Deux” is particularly concerning for Warner Bros., especially given the blockbuster success of its predecessor. With poor word-of-mouth likely impacting its longevity on the big screen, the future of this R-rated sequel seems unsure.
Considering the significant $200 million budget for “Folie à Deux” (the first film was made for just $65 million), it needs to generate at least $450 million to break even.
Production and Financial Risks
“When you greenlight a sequel, you hope it matches or surpasses the business of the original,” said an industry analyst. The high expectations on “Folie à Deux” were further inflated by the fact that Warner Bros. took significant financial risks, unlike the first movie, which was co-financed by several production houses, mitigating the risk.
A Gamble on Different Genres
Director Todd Phillips returned to helm “Joker: Folie à Deux”, bringing back Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck. This time, the storyline introduces Harleen “Lee” Quinzel (portrayed by Lady Gaga), as Fleck’s fellow inmate and co-conspirator in Arkham Asylum. Unlike the original gritty and dark drama, the sequel adopts musical elements, integrating covers of classic tracks like “Get Happy” and “That’s Entertainment.”
“Todd Phillips wanted to do something completely different, but musical numbers in a superhero film were always going to be a tough sell to mainstream audiences,” remarked an industry expert.
Market Performance of New Releases
While “Joker: Folie à Deux” struggled, other new releases also had varying levels of success:
- Lionsgate’s “White Bird” garnered a modest $1.5 million from 980 theaters. Despite being positioned as a prequel and sequel to 2017’s hit “Wonder”, focusing on a new character narrative didn’t resonate as hoped.
- “The Wild Robot”, a well-reviewed family film from DreamWorks Animation, secured second place with $18.7 million, bringing its two-week total to $63.9 million.
Highlights from Holdover Titles
Warner Bros. did find success elsewhere. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” clinched third place with a respectable $10.3 million, increasing its North American total to an impressive $265.5 million. Paramount’s “Transformers One” and Universal’s “Speak No Evil” rounded out the box office charts, earning $5.3 million and $2.8 million, respectively.
Emerging Winners
Significant buzz surrounds “Saturday Night”, a film chronicling the inaugural broadcast of “SNL,” which expanded its release from five to over 20 locations in its second weekend. It generated $280,000, averaging $13,333 per location, creating substantial talk for potential Oscars nominations.
The Road Ahead
Next weekend promises further competition with the release of “Piece By Piece”, a biographical feature on Pharrell Williams created using Lego animation, alongside the wide release of “Saturday Night.”
The big question remains: how will “Joker: Folie à Deux” hold up in its second weekend?
