Korean box office hit “I, The Executioner” maintains top spot, “Joker: Folie a Deux” enters charts
In a thrilling development for South Korean cinema, the crime-comedy-thriller “I, The Executioner,” a sequel to the 2015 hit “Veteran,” continues to dominate the weekend box office. This film has managed to enthrall audiences for four consecutive weekends, amassing $1.68 million in its latest session. Not far behind is the much-anticipated “Joker: Folie a Deux,” which premiered to an impressive debut, staking its claim as a top contender.
Cinematic success and market dynamics
“I, The Executioner” has exhibited remarkable staying power, though it did see a slight dip in market share to 29%. The film’s total gross now stands at an impressive $49.97 million since its release on September 13. This places it as the fourth highest-grossing film of the year in South Korea, trailing behind “Exhuma,” “The Roundup: Punishment,” and “Inside Out 2,” with the latter leading the pack with $64 million.
Meanwhile, “Joker: Folie a Deux” stormed onto the scene, earning $1.17 million between Friday and Sunday, securing a 21% market share. The film accumulated $3.60 million over its five-day opening run, which included the National Foundation Day holiday. This high-profile European release has attracted a broad audience, balancing artistic elements with commercial appeal.
Local drama and animated adventures
Released on the same day, “Love in the Big City” added a local flavor to the selection, earning $897,000 over the weekend and $1.88 million over its initial five days. This Korean-produced drama features Kim Go-eun, celebrated for her roles in “Exhuma,” “Cheese in the Trap,” and “Yumi’s Cells.”
Another notable new entrant, “The Wild Robot,” established its presence as the highest-ranked animated film in the top ten this week, pulling in $741,000 over the weekend and $1.69 million across its five opening days. The film’s unique storyline and vibrant animation have resonated well with audiences, offering a much-needed burst of creativity in the genre.
Former leaders and steady performers
The sci-fi spectacle “Transformers One,” which had previously claimed the highest opener spot, experienced a drop to fifth place, earning $251,000 this weekend for a cumulative total of $2.16 million. On the other hand, “Detective Conan: The Time-Bombed Skyscraper” remained resilient, securing sixth place with $152,000 over the weekend and accumulating $412,000 since its release.
In a nostalgic twist, the re-released “Begin Again” captured viewers’ hearts anew, earning $127,000 and contributing to a cumulative total, including its 2014 run, of $21.7 million. Such enduring appeal underscores the film’s universal themes and timeless soundtrack.
Animation reigns supreme
The animated crowd-pleaser “Heartsping: Teenieping of Love” continued its ascent as the highest-grossing Korean-made animation film of all time. The movie added $118,000 over the weekend, bringing its cumulative total to $7.91 million since its release on August 3. This highlights the growing market for locally-produced animations in Korea.
Also making waves in the animated domain is “Lim Young Woong: IM Hero The Stadium,” which earned ninth place with premium-priced tickets, gathering $94,500 for a running total of $6.63 million. This concert film solidifies the popularity of music-based features in the current market.
New entrants and market reflections
Closing out the top ten is “Butt Detective the Movie Farewell, My Lovely Partner, Butt Detective,” a Japanese animated release that earned $62,900 over the weekend and $226,000 over its five opening days. This film’s quirky charm and unique narrative structure have carved out a niche among animation enthusiasts.
Though overall weekend cinema revenue was $5.54 million, marking it as the second slowest weekend of the year, these diverse releases paint a hopeful picture for the future of cinema. Each film, from international blockbusters to local gems, adds a layer of richness to the cultural tapestry of the box office.
