Remembering Nell Smith: A Bright Star Dimmed Too Soon
Nell Smith, the young and intensely talented Canadian singer-songwriter, has left us all too soon at just 17 years old. Her unexpected passing has sent waves of shock and sorrow across the music community, particularly among those touched by her work with The Flaming Lips.
A family in mourning
Nell’s family confirmed her death on October 5 in a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram. They wrote, “It pains us so much to say that our feisty, talented, unique, beautiful daughter was cruelly taken from us on Saturday night.” They went on to express their deep grief and the immense void left by her passing. “She had so much more to experience and to give this world, but we are grateful that she got to experience so very much in her 17 years. She has left an indelible mark on the world and an unfillable chasm in our hearts.”
They ended with a simple yet poignant request: “Hold your kids extra tight tonight and for now please leave us to work through things. We will shout when we need you.”
The Flaming Lips share the news
During a Flaming Lips concert on October 6, frontman Wayne Coyne took a moment to share the somber news with fans. Before performing “Everything Has Changed,” he explained that Nell had tragically died in a car accident the previous night. “We have a very sad announcement to make tonight. We have a Canadian friend, her name is Nell. We recorded an amazing album with her three years ago, an album full of songs by Nick Cave. We have some very sad messages today — she was killed in a car accident last night.”
Coyne reflected on the timeless connection music creates, reminding everyone of how it can unite us even in the darkest times. “We are reminded once again of the power of music and how encouraging it can be to be around people that you love.”
A promising career cut short
Nell was on the cusp of releasing her debut solo album in 2025, a project that had already garnered significant support through a Kickstarter campaign. Despite her young age, she had managed to capture the imagination of both fans and industry veterans alike.
Simon Raymonde of Bella Union, the label head behind her upcoming release, expressed his shock and sadness on social media. “We are all shocked and devastated to hear of the sudden and tragic passing of our artist and dear friend Nell Smith. While we all try and come to terms with the awful news, and out of respect to Nell’s grieving family, we are unable to make any further comments at this time.”
A connection forged in music
Nell’s relationship with The Flaming Lips began in the most whimsical of ways. In 2018, at the age of 12, she attended one of their shows dressed in a parrot costume, catching the attention of Wayne Coyne. This serendipitous moment sparked a lasting friendship and musical collaboration that would profoundly shape Nell’s burgeoning career.
As Nell started learning to play guitar, Coyne became a mentor, guiding her through an ambitious project during the pandemic. Though their initial recording plans were disrupted by COVID-19, Coyne suggested Nell take on covers of Nick Cave songs—an artist she wasn’t initially familiar with.
The result was “Where the Viaduct Looms,” released in 2021, where Nell’s haunting renditions of Cave’s songs, backed by The Flaming Lips, showcased her unique talent. Coyne remarked at the time, “It is always great to meet excited, young creative people. With Nell, we could see she is on a journey and thought it would be fun to join her for a while and see if we could get things going.”
Nick Cave himself praised Nell’s rendition of “Girl in Amber,” saying, “This version of ‘Girl in Amber’ is just lovely. I was going to say Nell Smith inhabits the song, but that’s wrong; rather she vacates the song, in a way that I could never do.” He added, “Nell shows a remarkable understanding of the song, a sense of dispassion that is both beautiful and chilling. I just love it. I’m a fan.”
The larger impact of her passing
Nell Smith’s time in the music world may have been brief, but it was marked by creativity, passion, and a bold spirit. Her collaborations with The Flaming Lips and her unique interpretations of Nick Cave’s work positioned her as a compelling voice in the indie music scene.
Tragically, her passing coincides with another moment of distress for The Flaming Lips. The band’s instrumentalist, Steven Drozd, is currently grappling with the disappearance of his 16-year-old daughter, Charlotte “Bowie” Drozd. Both Drozd and Coyne have taken to social media to share missing person posters, urging anyone with information to come forward.
A lasting legacy
Nell Smith’s story is a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the enduring power of music. Her brief but impactful career has left a lasting imprint on all who had the pleasure of hearing her voice and witnessing her talent.
