Pierce Brosnan finds new depths with “The Unholy Trinity”
exploring richer characters in Hollywood
Pierce Brosnan’s illustrious career takes another exciting turn as he delves into more complex roles. Discussing his evolution as an actor, he shares, “I tell my sons: ‘Work gets work.’ I’ve been fortunate to build a substantial and entertaining body of work over the years, filled with some wonderful jewels.”
Brosnan’s recent journey is highlighted by his latest film The Unholy Trinity, where his performance has garnered high praise. Director Richard Gray offers insights into Brosnan’s recent endeavors: “Pierce is a ridiculously good actor. He’s been involved in several promising projects lately, showcasing his versatility. Over the next decade, his acclaim will only grow.”
the magnetic duo: brosnan and jackson
The movie, set to close the Zurich Film Festival, marks another significant milestone in Brosnan’s career, where he squares off against the formidable Samuel L. Jackson. Gray reflects on the dream collaboration: “Working with Pierce and Sam was like a dream come true. These legends elevate everyone around them.”
The film’s plot sees Brosnan as a sheriff who fled Ireland during the famine, now battling skepticism from a town that doubts his toughness. In contrast, Jackson plays a master manipulator. Their witty and dynamic interplay promises to captivate audiences, blending action and revenge with moments of levity.
In character, Brosnan embodies a decent man striving to do his best. He adds, “Many Irishmen and women built the West on their shoulders, crafting lives filled with romance and hard work.”
a personal passion for westerns
Brosnan’s interest in westerns isn’t newfound. “I grew up watching westerns and always wanted to be part of one. Working on this film, I had my two sons who also featured in it. If they choose to pursue acting, I won’t stop them despite the challenges.”
Gray, the director, shares a similar passion, having adored westerns since childhood. “Western genre strikes a pure chord. The post-Civil War era in the U.S., between the 1860s and 1890s, is rich with stories of diverse backgrounds exploring new terrains.”
Gray relocated to Montana over a decade ago, embracing the western spirit just before the pandemic. He views the western genre as inherently international, commenting on its relevance, “Many of the struggles depicted are still pertinent today, involving strong female characters, racial equality, and protection of Native lands.”
innovative storytelling in a classic genre
The Unholy Trinity introduces Q’orianka Kilcher as a woman wrongfully accused, adding another layer of complexity. “It’s a traditional western with original elements,” Gray explains. “Samuel L. Jackson’s character is a former slave seeking to reclaim stolen gold, while Brosnan’s Gabriel attempts to quell this revenge against a backdrop of divided townsfolk.”
Gray’s inspirations include classics like “Once Upon a Time in the West”, “Pale Rider”, and “High Plains Drifter”. He emphasizes the balance between historical accuracy and entertainment, highlighted by the creation of the Yellowstone Film Ranch, a meticulously crafted western town.
the future of westerns: from calamity jane to new stories
Looking ahead, Gray has ambitious plans for the genre. He aims to explore new narratives, such as a reimagining of Calamity Jane’s childhood and a series about Stagecoach Mary, the first African American woman to become a U.S. mail carrier. “We’ve been developing it for ages, and Mary’s story of resilience is inspiring.”
Gray hints at upcoming ventures, including a Dracula western and a werewolf western, underlining his commitment to breathing new life into the genre. “I live, breathe, and eat westerns,” he says. “And I never tire of it.”
Produced by Amadeus Productions, The Unholy Trinity features an ensemble of talents including Gray, Kellie Brooks, Colin Floom, Michele Gray, Jeanne Allgood Gaisford, Carter Boehm, and Cameron Lessard in its production team.
