A deep dive into Lewis Pullman’s latest projects and actor’s journey
Salem’s Lot: A chilling adaptation
In the new adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel Salem’s Lot, Lewis Pullman brings the complex character of Ben Mears to life—a writer who finds himself battling vampires in his quaint New England hometown. This film navigates the eerie transformation of the familiar into the terrifyingly unknown, creating a gripping narrative that promises to engage and haunt its audiences.
Crafting a believable horror hero
During a feature interview, Pullman recounted how his Top Gun: Maverick co-star, Danny Ramirez, assisted him in developing his character’s arc, particularly focusing on Ben’s reactions to encountering the supernatural. By employing a technique involving note cards, Pullman meticulously mapped out his character’s evolution from skepticism to acceptance of the vampire threat. He explained, “Initially, Ben doesn’t believe vampires are real. But as he sees, hears, and witnesses more, his beliefs slowly shift. I aimed to capture this transformation with a natural, flowing progression.”
Stunt work that took a toll
Working on Salem’s Lot wasn’t just about getting into character—it was also physically demanding. Pullman was taken aback by the extensive stunt work required. “The script’s raw action details came to life in ways I didn’t fully expect,” he noted. Comparing it to his experience in Top Gun: Maverick, he mentioned, “While Top Gun involved mostly seated action, in Salem’s Lot, I found myself running, jumping, and fighting on the ground. A significant portion of the movie, especially scenes like the drive-in movie theater sequence, required rigorous physical endurance.”
Marvel’s Thunderbolts: The secret world of the MCU
Marvel enthusiasts were recently treated to the first glimpse of Pullman in the anticipated movie Thunderbolts. Though shrouded in secrecy, Pullman’s involvement sparked excitement, notably for his mysterious character, Bob, who fans speculate could be Sentry.
Reflecting on his entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Pullman shared, “It felt like an exclusive realm I never thought I’d join. The audition process was like joining a high-security organization. Everything was confidential, right down to holding onto a set of sides for barely an hour.”
Building strong performances in secretive productions
Director Jake Schreier played a crucial role in guiding Pullman through his character’s journey for Thunderbolts. Without access to a full script, Pullman relied on Schreier’s storytelling, described as an almost “campfire” experience. “It was unique and old-fashioned. Jake described the story vividly to me, ensuring I grasped the essence of my character even without seeing the entire script,” Pullman said.
Speculations and the future of Top Gun
With discussions circulating about a potential third installment of Top Gun, Pullman remains tight-lipped but hopeful. He confessed knowing little about the project’s progress, though he acknowledged Glen Powell’s enthusiastic claims about a script. ”If Tom Cruise believes the story deserves continuation and it adds value to Maverick’s journey, it could certainly be a reality,” he stated optimistically.
Taking on diversified roles
Approaching each role with dedication, Pullman expressed a keen interest should an opportunity arise to join a shelved project alongside Ramirez, previously set to star with Joaquin Phoenix. “I’d jump at that chance. It’s a fantastic idea, and I’m ready whenever the call comes.”
