Sarah Drew opens up about her controversial exit from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
A sudden departure
In a candid and revealing discussion, Sarah Drew, widely known for her portrayal of Dr. April Kepner on the long-running medical series Grey’s Anatomy, shared her feelings about her sudden dismissal from the show in 2018. Her reflections were part of a heartfelt conversation on the “Call It What It Is” podcast.
Nine seasons in, a sudden end
Sarah Drew joined Grey’s Anatomy during its sixth season, quickly becoming a beloved character among fans. Playing the intricately layered Dr. April Kepner, Drew was once part of the show’s core ensemble. However, after the completion of the 14th season, both she and Jessica Capshaw, who portrayed Dr. Arizona Robbins, found themselves unexpectedly let go.
Feeling unceremoniously dismissed
Reflecting on her departure, Drew described the experience as “mean and unjust.” The lack of ceremony surrounding her exit amplified the pain, making it a disheartening farewell after almost a decade on the show.
“We were unceremoniously let go in a way that felt mean and unjust. The outpouring of love I received was overwhelming; it was like watching people eulogize you,” Drew expressed on the podcast.
The immediate aftermath
The news of Drew’s exit was met with an emotional response from fans. Amidst the flurry of reactions on social media, Drew took to X (formerly Twitter) to address her followers. Her statement was raw and honest:
“I know you’re sad. I’m sad too. I haven’t really had the time to process this information. I’ve been with it for less than 48 hours, so I’m not ready to say my thank yous and give an all-encompassing statement about my 9 years here.”
A liberating return
Surprisingly, Drew later returned to Grey’s Anatomy as a guest star, appearing in both Seasons 17 and 18. Her return to the set was not only welcomed by fans but also provided her with an unexpected sense of freedom.
“I have no attachment to [the show] at all,” Drew explained. “I had zero anxiety [going back because] I don’t need anything from anyone on that set anymore. They’re not responsible for my livelihood anymore. They’re not responsible for my success or my joy… I’m like, ‘Hey! This is a fun spot to come visit.’”
Behind the scenes revelations
During her time on the “Call It What It Is” podcast, Drew also shared interesting tidbits about character arcs that never came to fruition. For instance, she revealed that her character, April, was initially intended to have a one-night stand with Dr. Mark Sloan (played by Eric Dane) in Season 7.
“Before they made my character love Jesus and a virgin, there’s a scene where Sloan and Reed [Nora Zehetner] have sex, a random one-night stand. That was supposed to be me originally. It was supposed to be April.”
Navigating industry challenges
Drew’s story isn’t an isolated incident in the entertainment industry. Sudden cast changes, contractual negotiations, and altering storylines are common, often reflecting broader trends within the industry. For actors, such experiences can be both challenging and transformative, forcing them to diversify their careers and explore new opportunities.
A broader discussion on career transitions
Actors facing unexpected career changes often find themselves reflecting on their craft and the volatile nature of television fame. Drew’s experience is a testament to resilience and adaptability that many actors must embody to continue thriving after significant shifts in their careers.
Embracing new beginnings
For Sarah Drew, life after Grey’s has been about embracing new roles and opportunities, both on-screen and off-screen. She continues to engage with her audience through various platforms, showcasing her range and versatility as an actress.
“Returning to Grey’s Anatomy as a guest star was one of the most freeing experiences of my career. It reminded me of why I fell in love with acting in the first place.”
As Drew moves forward, her journey inspires many, underscoring the importance of perseverance and the joy of rediscovering one’s passion.
